buying a vtr
Hi all I just joined the site I have put deposit down on a firestorm 1997 model is mint is there anything major to look out for plz
Re: buying a vtr
welcome to the club.
yes you need to look out for the following:
1) are the Cam Chain Tensioners replaced with either maunal ones or a stopper mod fitted
2) is the Regulator / Rectifier replaced with a newer finned type
3) petrol stations, you will get 100 miles then find a station
4) if the forks havent been modified you should lookf to fit stiffer weight related springs and new 7.5wt oil.......stock ones are too soft
5) is there a spacer under the top shock mount.......if not fit 3 off 1mm washers cut into a "C" shape top help the bike turn in a bit faster
PS what colour is Mint?

Re: buying a vtr
Stopper mod - Free, but you need to be OK with Spaners and follow the instructions in teh workshop section. manual CCTs you can buy from some of the guys on here, various prices but under £50, but you still need to be good with Spanners and follow instructions.
Reg/ rec - get one off ebay for about £30
Fork springs £80 from wemoto
Spacer - free
Petrol - extortionate!

Welcome to the mad house 8-)
I'm sure it won't stay standard for long, plenty of good mods to do.
Cam chain tensioners must be your first priority, they can fail at any time and will cause major engine damage. Don't replace with new standard ones, manual ones are the way to go imho.
Keep an eye out for strange electrical behaviour, speedo or tacho needles twitching etc, it's a sign that the regulator rectifier has failed and is overcharging the battery. The standard rr is of poor design, it overheats and cooks itself.
The mod is to fit a finned unit that runs cooler.
Mine is original but i refitted it with heatsink compound between the frame and rr, it definitely runs cooler.
Don't spend too much time faffing with it though, get out and use it.
Have fun.

Welcome to the storm club.
The storm has it's quirks and is most fun to ride, the torque nand engine braking is seriously addictive.
You will get to know your bike inside out on here, so stick around and join in on the fun.

Welcome to the mad house.
Sorry to hear you've picked the slowest colour. I think the list of urgent jobs would be
1) Cam chain tensioners
2) Regulator/Rectifier
3) Spray it yellow
