Air Filters and Bearings!!

Post by dogfish66 »

Hey Guys,

A couple of things i have done recently i thought id share that produced surprising results :

1. Air FIlter -
As you will all know by now but i recently found out. VTR's are very sensitive when changing air filters - my intention was to replace my filter with a K&N for better breathing. So whilst i was powder coating the can covers i took the air box off and the carbs and also removed the plastic shield on top of the front cylinder and in front of the front carb to improve airflow - in my experience the more air in faster air out, filter and exhaust route always releases some power.
After re assembly and start up everything was cool till i went for my first ride - major hesitation through throttle position 2 - 8 - but faster on full bore. :wtf:
So took the filter out and put stock back in and tried again - The same thing but less pronounced.
Then i put the guard back in and left the K&N in - The same thing but less pronounced.
So put it all back to stock with new std filter and guard/shield back in place - No problem whatsoever.
Allowing for the fact that it may have gone better if i had fitted a dynojet at the same time i summised that VTR's must be very sensitive in std guise to not neccessarily grater airflow, but disturbed airflow.
A quick call to the Roger D confirmed that in std form they can tend to exibit a strange array of symptoms if playing with filters pre dynojet!!
Wierd!

2. Changed All the Bearings -
MOT done with pass cert in hand with an advise for steering head bearings. Its a 98 bike, with 15k on so hardly old, but figured i might as well do the whole lot if i was going to do the headstock - New tapers in the headstock, new wheel bearings and new spocket carrier bearing plus all seals fitted etc went in a treat.

WOW - what a difference it made, form rolling mass to direction changes, i never thought id notice such a difference. Especially as there was no major disernable wear/slack in the old ones.

Sometimes its the little things that make the biggest difference......

so i keeep telling the Mrs
