smoke coming from alternator connector

Post by blob748 »

Hi,
i was going to change the oil, took the seat off and had the bike warming up, as i looked back at the alternator wiring connector and there was smoke coming out of it. I checked the regulator and that was at 5000 revs, it was charging just under 14, so i dont think that its the regulator. Any ideas??????

yeh change the reg rec before it fails.
also make sure the connector isnt corroded - get some dielectric grease from an auto electric shop or halfords etc.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Probably corrosion on the connector. Give it a good clean up with some elbow grease and contact cleaner or crimp on new ends if you have the technology :)

Hi, i think i have solved the problem, i changed the regulator but it was still smoking so i changed the generator which seemed to solve it. In the process i managed to tip over 4 litres of oil as i pulled the bike off the paddock stand and the side stand came down on the oil tray.........out came the washing powder!!!
Thanks for the replies :whatever

I bet there was a few choice words being uttered in the blob household.

Anything visually wrong with the genny? Burnt looking coils etc?
