Too much throttle = retardation?

Post by VeeMiG »

Hi guys,

If i'm a bit too exuberant with the throttle when accelerating hard, the bike seems to check me. In so much as the engine dies off a little - as if the ignition is being retarded. I have to roll off slightly to get it into the 'sweet spot' and the bike starts accelerating again. Is this normal? Is it a safety feature? :confused

Sorry if this is a silly question, but as the Storm is my first big bike I have no real point of reference.

hi, i wouldnt think its normal, mine pulls hard all the way through the rev range.could be a small fuelling problem. does it do this at the same throttle position? or is it an intermittent thing?

Assuming your in the correct gear then thats not right, check to see if your air filter's clean as a starting point..If your in the wrong gear and opening up hard from low revs this would/could cause what your describing.

the pilot / slow jet might be dirty, gassing it hard from a standstill it might not be flowing properly causing it to feel like it's cutting out a split second it was doing this on my bike around the 2.5 - 3 k mark when i set off from lights or up a hill had this on some carbs got some replacements and cleaned them and job's a good un, worth a try as its free to clean

I agree with everything said above. It's not normal and the bike should pull cleanly from idle right up to the redline with no hesitations. Basically it sounds like the bike needs a tune up.

Start with plugs and filter, then move onto carbs. With regards to the carbs follow Sebs link above and give them a strip and clean, there may be some dirt clogging something. It may seem a bit daunting but if you know one end of a spanner from another then it's a reasonably simple task. Make a note of what the carb set up is with regards to jet sizes and needles.

While the carbs are off it's worth adjusting the TPS at the same time. Read my post here with some links regarding it http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... or#p203776 Put the carbs back on and balance/sync and you should be good to go.

Are you running aftermarket exhausts and/or aftermarket airfilter? Also stick your location in your user control panel so it comes up under your avatar. If your local to me I will strip and clean your carbs for you if you don't feel confident enough.

Haven't got an over-oiled K+N, have you?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
