SP1 clocks on an '01 VTR?

Post by Virt »

I've found a VTR at an acceptable price worth buying, with the updated clocks, HISS and larger fuel tank. But it's a parallel important and has a speedo in km/h and an odometer in km. buying a UK clock set for it costs about £250 on eBay, yet SP1 clocks sell for about £100. Does anyone know whether it's possible to fit one in a VTR? Cause otherwise I'm just getting a UK speedo underlay and ignoring the odometer completely

I'm sure it's possible but will not be either a straight swap or easy task. You will need wiring diagrams for both bikes and work out what is needed and what is not and which wires to connect where. You will then need either a connector block for back of sp dash and some wires or an sp loom you can cut up to connect the wiring to the existing Storm wiring. You then have to upgrade the Temp sender unit to work with the digital dash. You also need to take into consideration the fuel level gauge. As this is a digital gauge rather than a light so the tank will need to be updated with a float that moves up and down from a later Storm or another bike that may be compatible that reads the fuel level rather that a sensor that just pick up when it drops to a certain level. Also you will need a speedo healer if you want an accurate speeedo. The Redline on the tacho will also differ. You could probably open the unit up and adapt this with paint/sticker or whatever.

So as you can see there is quite a bit of work involved and it is no easy task. I'm going to eventually be fitting a CBR1000RR dash to mine. Others have fitted a CBR600 or upgraded to the later Storm dash

Oh okay, sounds like something I can waste away my evenings on then :P The VTR I'm looking at is the later model with the digital fuel gauge though, so surely that one should still work? And from what I can tell the redline on the tacho is in the same place, at like 9000rpm I think? But it sounds complicated, I'll have to think about it. Like I said though, it's either all that or just change the underlay on the speedo for mph and kmh cause I can't be bothered to find a converter or whatever for my odometer. Thanks though :)

EDIT: Decided to just change the underlay for the speedo, not bothered about my odometer and this'll save me about £200.. One of the reasons I want a later model is I quite like the clocks, so it would be a waste to change them :) Thanks for the advice though, may be worth thinking about down the line

treat yourself to a trans logic dash instead - theyre awesme and can be adapted to fit any bike

about 400 notes but worth every penny imo.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

400 wing wangs? Hmm.. Maybe a long way down the line :L definitely not within my price range, provided I get the 'storm I'm looking at I'm already spending more than I originally wanted to :P And there's a lot of things on that dash, might take a while getting used to

There's a good thread on the Superhawk site regarding a later model Storm dash.

i've wanted one for awhile, 400 for a dash seems alot, but there are certain factors to consider, firstly id you wanted to buy a gear position indicator, they cost approx £100, well the trans has that covered, so now your looking at £300, you can take the trans with you from bike to bike and just refit your old dash, you can also be a bit dodgy at this point because your mileage wouldn't have increased.... :shh:
and finally if you decide to sell it, you would get around £250 back because i'm yet to see a secondhand unit sell for less, so to begin with a large outlay but its not as crazy as you think, i hope to get one in the future.... :D
