Explosion when trying to start

Post by Virt »

I know I don't own a VTR, but I was trying to start my bike just now and the engine wouldn't fire. An explosion-ish sound followed by the distinct smell of burning. Any idea what this could be? :S

When you say explosion, do you mean from the engine or a backfire from the exhaust. And is this an explosion as in bang or noisy mechanical noise?

No idea.. Smoke came from the sides of the engine and it wouldn't start again for about 20 minutes (I didn't wanna start it. Kinda scared) but the noise came from the exhaust. And I mean as in a bang, several neighbours seemed to think I was making IED's from how quickly they ran to see what I was doing.

If it helps, I haven't used it in like a week as I've been away and my dad did some work to try, and fail, to balance the carbs. But he says he managed to get it running smoothly for ages after finishing, it's only this time it's brokeded..

Could just be unburnt fuel in the exhaust, but are you saying it still won't start or you are just afraid to start it incase it is an IED?

But sounds like you can blame your dad and make him get you a new bike out of guilt

Can you smell fuel? Take the plugs out are they wet?
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Scared to sh1t of touching the bloody thing :L I'm trying to but he's still insisting I have to buy my next bike :( I think he's just annoyed that I'll have a more powerful bike than him when I get my firestorm ;)

I couldn't smell fuel, just that horrible burning stench.. But it didn't smell like burning fuel? More like burning metal if that makes sense? :L Bikes in the shed now, cba to unlock it and have a look as it's too dark. I'll check tomorrow :)

Okay, we've managed to locate and fix the problem. My dad forgot to connect the vacuum pipe thing to the fuel tank... All is well :) I blame him completely.

:P No money involved, it's a satanic, devilish (IL4) CB600F.. The older style though, the 1999 model, not the horrible looking new ones
