Found this, very interesting high quality info on Mosfets and fitting. For a Triumph but applicable for VTR's. Useful info on better connectors.

And a simplified talk through.

Can I ask why is a mosfet one "better", is this just a cae of Platinum being better than Gold..I understand the basics of this but isnt this being a tad anal? Would anyone notice the difference, I suggest not. :whatever

Yes, the Mosfet is more efficient, runs cool, and is very very reliable.A good reason to fit one.

The non-Mosfet type bleeds excess power by heating up, which eventually kills it. That's 1960's technology. This is 2013. Thankfully....... :D

I would humbly suggest you would notice the difference between a fried RR and cooked battery and a healthy one, ??

Connectors have come a long way too, you can now get totally waterproof ones, see the link to the Triumph rr mod in the above post, all the info you need about the benefits is in there.

yes I have had the rr failure...twice...mmmm, I fitted an R1 one it hardly heats up at all, probably cos of the size of the thing, i was just saying are we going a bit nuts about teeny improvements that we wont really notice, in 32 years of riding I have had 2 reg failures (both on this bike) with replacements at £25 and £10...albeit with a new battery on the 2nd failure, I admire you guys chasing the perfect this and that but once you have fitted non Honda electrics really your sorted. Now someone send me a 3mm spacer cos I just seen my 6mm one made the shock touch the exhaust, I took the fooker out and now it wont go round corners....sigh. :D

I've just received in the post an '07 R1 RR- the MOSFET type with 2 plugs. I know eastern beaver supply the 2 plugs for it ($20 +del) but I'm planning to do a neat job of spades, solder, cable ties & heat shrink.

I paid £60 for the RR but after my finned R/R failed last week I wanted a more reliable solution!

Only thing is it is chuffing big- hopefully it will fit, even with just one (longer due to thickness) bolt.

Anyway. Ill fit at the weekend with pics. Griff.

So you've fitted an R1 Mosfet RR and have had no further bother so are wondering is fitting a Mosfet anal :?:

What bike do you refer to, it can't be a VTR, known for failures, as your bike is 32 yrs old...? and its not about fitting non-Honda parts, its fitting a better Shindengo, same make...RR.

I dont think you undestand, both failures have been on my vtr, I have replaced the reg with a R1 one, I have never had a failure on any bike I have owned before, about 15 bikes in all, the R1 as far as im aware isnt a mosfet one, this works great, runs cool and I'll bet my man lumps that it doesnt fail while I own this bike, and also I'll bet that I wont notice the micro voltage/stability/power loss/temp/etc seriously I think some people just think too much and dont just ride more without all the anal crap which I see on here increasingly so. Before you start (and this isnt aimed at anyone in particular) spitting out your char over the cat as someone seems to be going against the grain here, I think you are alienating the "normal" people here with all your technobabble which in the end some of you can thrust your chests out because you have discovered that a 0.0067 sliver off the hyperdoogle results in a flibbertyjiblet on the retrorocket thus resulting in a 0.0000000001 increase in horse power is just baldrocks, keep it real.....now slag me off please.
