Something else to try......

Post by mik_str »

it never ends, lol

Presenting the inspiration for my latest project:
Image

Not sure what you gents think but I love the tidy look of the rear brake master set-up on this bike. So, it being winter in Canada, and my brain being afflicted with OCMD, I am inspired to try something similar.

The MC on the picture comes from a Honda CRF motocross bike. Regrettably, it uses a small 3/8" piston (about 9.5mm), much too small for the VTR which uses a 14mm piston OEM. After doing some "rootin' around", I noticed that the similar Nissin units used on RM-Z and KX bikes use a significantly larger 1/2" piston (12.7mm), which is much closer size-wise to the VTR unit. In fact, I figure it's close enough to try a swap.

I picked one up cheap on eBay and will see if the mounting holes line up when it gets here (if not, it will be going back up for sale). If it does, I will replacing the banjo with a pressure switch unit to tidy up the wiring (as on the picture). I will also be looking for a "blingy" anodized cover (blue) to finish it off.

Will keep you posted :)

I like that. It looks like it has the fluid reservoir built into it as well which is a neat idea. Looking at the heatshrink over the wiring on the pressure banjo has given me the idea to do that with mine. P Banjo's are great, but I don't like the way the wiring stick out of them.

using a smaller MC might be a decent idea anyway, it reduces the chance of a back wheel lockup (Iam not talking about when changing down either)

ive seen the rear master cylinder with the built in reservoir for sale on ebay, and thought the same that will make the bike look alot cleaner in that area, have you ordered the one that comes from china?

I like it, those mx integrated master cylinders look nice, GasGas use them on their enduro bikes as well.

If the piston is a bit smaller it will make the brake stronger, but there will be more pedal travel, but I think the rear brake needs more power, so it could be a good way to go

I see edds point regrading it locking up. Even on a well bled standard one there is not much pedal travel and it's all too easy to put too much force on and have it lock up. I'm not sure if that that does not mean, the pressure at the pads is necessarily any good. I'm don't understand how the smaller and larger piston combinations effect things. In a way with the standard set up a slight bit of sponginess is sought of better, especially if your just dabbing the break in the corners.

Just seen this over the pond but I will post here for other's.

smaller piston moves less fluid, so requires more travel. However, the smaller the pistons, the more line pressure it creates (for same force applied) so a smaller piston will actually generate MORE braking power (though it should be easier to modulate).

Having done a quick calculation, the RM master I bought (pistons dia. is 12.7mm instead of 14mm as on OEM) will require 21% more travel (and, as noted above, should generate 21% more line pressure). Seems to me to be a decent "upgrade". The Yamahas come with 11mm pistons (again, yet more travel and line pressure). Though I haven`t tried any of these, the CRF`s relatively small 3/8" (@9.5mm) piston just seemed too small for me (notably for the lever travel issue). I could be wrong on this latter point, wouldn`t be the first time.......

Actually it's a funny market the Chinese stuff cause some of it is actually of decent quality and it's getting better all the time. But some of it is total crap and borderline dangerous with some components. It's just that one never knows what is good and what is bad as all their marketing looks the same. I have not heard anything about master cylinders, but have heard some nightmare stories about disc's/rotors which has put me right off. I just wouldn't trust using vital braking components. Levers is about as far I would go with brakes from the Chinese.

I think it might be a wee bit xenophobic to tar all Chinese products with the same brush- they have made a lot of money selling cheap low quality goods, but then so did the Koreans, and take a look at who made your monitor or tv....

The Chinese have worked out that quality is what gets you repeat business, and they're raising their game.

But that can only be a good thing, IMHO.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks Chris.

Looking forward to getting this done, as well as the ZX-10R forks. :)
