Front Wheel Bearing

Post by VTRDark »

Got the headstock bearings done and forks back on. I'm now onto the front wheel bearings and I'm stuck. I can't get them out for the life of me. I bashed them and my hands  I've heated them up, I have tried to break one apart wit a small cold chisel and now that's stuck in there between the balls  wiggling from side to side wont even get that back out. I've been trying to break on apart so all the bearing fall out.

If I hit one from one side on the outer circumference will it push the opposite side back out. I can't get enough on the inner ally spacer sleeve to knock it back through the other side and that is just going to get mashed up. I can't put anything down through the centre to push behind the bearing as there is nothing to catch it on. If the inner spacer sleeve just had a slightly smaller circumference then I could knock it through from the other side.

What a nightmare. Lesson learned. Buy the right tool for the job, so bearing removal tools/puller will be on my shopping list. I wish I hadn't started now.

I done it, for some reason the spacer wasn't moving across enough for me to get my drift on to wack the bearing out. It seemed walking away for in frustration for 5mins, having a breather and then going back to it done it :D Now for the other side which will be simple.

i had same problem, the trick is to turn the wheel round and try and get the other side out 1st. the bit of casting the centers the spacer is right beside one bearing so that side it is tough to catch the edge of the bearing, but from the other side it will move out of the way

That's exactly what happened. I turned it over to do the other side and it all went as sweet as a nut. That's was after bashing by thumb and get a few cuts.

Yep, frustrating but ultimately easy when you realise that you can just push the spacer over by a couple of mm and get the drift a purchase that way. :D
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Well done Carl, at least you got there in the end  The front wheel bearings are definitely not as easy to get moving as the rear IMHO.

Interesting what you say about the castings AMcQ, something I hadn't noticed :)
