Servicing your air filter

Post by seb421 »

Something to bear in mind when it comes to servicing your K&N / Pipercross / BMC is that it will be a nightmare to get the same oil coverage / consistency / flow as came from the factory and you will either be running lean or rich from your jetting set before you re oiled.

Recently cleaned the Air Filter (full of winter salt / grit) and on Re-Oiling it said not to over oil in the instructions, but left me high and dry as to how much oil to actually apply..... it would be great if the filter said on it x-amount of oil from factory etc but they don't :Ball Kick:

Trouble is i had no idea how much oil was on it before as it was factory oiled

So i gave it a little bit on the black foam (piper-cross) top dirty side

Tried it... pop pop pop on the over run Mega Lean cutting out when stopping and coffing on as down change

Again more oil, still way lean

Again little more, still lean but getting better

Again more oil and massage it into the foam, nearly back to how it was

Turns out it comes with quite a lot of oil saturated deep in the foam, one more little spray over and rubbing gently in should have it back to how it was when i first jetted it

Couldn't be bothered adjusting the carbs again to suit the airflow so just kept adding oil till it felt as it should again.

K+N instructions are reasonably clear, was the filter medium until it is clean, the using K+N oil oil it until you can see an eve spray of colour (it's pinky red) across the filter surface.
Seems to work.
I overoiled one once, and as you say, it runs very badly, won't rev out and runs very rich.
But all you have to do is re-wash and start again.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I have no idea why Pipercross have a black filter? and there oil used is clear and a lot finer than k&N's

it just seams illogical to me as you canst see coverage, and my take on a light oiling to there's was way off

Pipercross Cleaning Instructions

The cleaning of a Pipercross air filter should be carried out as below. Failure to do this could result in damage to the air filter or even the vehicle.

Remove excess dirt by gently brushing the filter.
Apply cleaning additive (C9003 or C9000) liberally. Massage in with soft brush. Allow to soak for around 5 minutes.
Flush the filter out with warm water from the clean side of the foam to the dirty side.
Allow the filter to dry naturally (do not apply any heat to the filter!!)
Lightly apply dirt retention additive (C9007 or C9001) on the dirty (black) side of the foam.
Steps 2-4 may need to be repeated until the filter is clean. Do not over oil the foam as this will cause a lack of performance.
