running rich
running rich
my bikes running very lumpy low down to the point its cutting out in traffic, ive only owned it a couple of months, its really starting to p**s me right off. the bike has a standard filter and remus high level cans, obviously the cans have been put on and the carbs not adjusted. was bearable until i got to the tt and she started running really rich were she was puffing black smoke and flames out both exhausts. she was also drinking petrol really bad,got 50 miles from £20.ruined my tt a bit tbh, hard to fix somthing in the middle of a field in another country, lol, checked the plugs and the rear one was really oiled up, ive now replaced them. is there anyone has a similar set up, just wondering about the air fuel mixture screws. ive balanced the carbs and im gonna adjust the tps tommorrow. Was talking to a good mechanic today and his advice was a rolling road, just seeking some advice here 1st before i shell out for that. another problem ive discovered is my fuel lights stopped working along with the light for the speedo, what fuse controls these lights, they did work when i first got the bike.
Re: running rich
Cans would make it run leaner if standard jetting was still in place mate, so it aint that. Sticky choke would be my first port of call, it will cost you nothing, to at least if nothing else, rule it out. Who knows though, you might get lucky. I assume your air filter is clean and you've checked your plugs ?? If they're black its rich. Dont go down the rolling road route till you exhaust all other avenues. I had a fueling issue with a bike recently, first opinion from a so called mechanic was jetting it up to match the can, but I know for a fact that this wasn't the problem.
Check your choke is releasing freely at the carbs end.

Re: running rich
The low down lumpy running and cutting out sounds like the tps but the rest sounds like its developed another fault, I would go with leevtr and check chokes etc first, a lot of folk think the rolling road is a miracle cure, sadly they're not and it will probably only tell you what you already know-its not running rich/over fuelling. Is it noticeably down on power aswell ?
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most
Re: running rich
If its not the choke then you may have a sticky float. It sounds that a full carb strip & clean may be in order, at the same time you will be able to check the jet sizes. The rear one will be larger, this is normal to run the rear pot richer thus cooler.

I agree with that recommendation

Take care when you strip the carbs that you don't mix up things like the emulsion tubes as although they look the same they are different.

Thanks for the advice, sticky choke was somthing I had thought about, will check all your replies out,il do a full strip down and clean tommorrow, stuck on nightshift at the mo and im busting to get the bike fixed and get a run, she was down on power at the tt, almost like she was running on one cylinder, just didnt sound or feel right

sam if u need a hand call round 39 st annes mate
Re: running rich
Be careful with the plastic bolts that attach the choke to each carbs they are quite fragile and can snap easily. The following link may be worth a read and there is some useful links at the bottom as well. http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 14#p238578

thanks jim,i got the carbs stripped down, the pilot jets were a bit gunked up,got everything cleaned, the chokes were gunked up so got them cleaned and put a new choke cable on.The tps is way out,it measured 1080 on the multimeter.il slot the holes and sort that. Im convinced now that the bad luck at the tt was down to the rear plug giving a weak spark and the rough idle is down to that tps reading. The carbs are in good nick and all rubbers and pipes are good, fingers crossed when i get it all back together i have a sweet running bike. is a tps usually that high, i was expecting 800 as mr honda set from the factory
Re: running rich
My tps was at 800 when I had the carbs off. Set it to 500.Sammyd wrote:thanks jim,i got the carbs stripped down, the pilot jets were a bit gunked up,got everything cleaned, the chokes were gunked up so got them cleaned and put a new choke cable on.The tps is way out,it measured 1080 on the multimeter.il slot the holes and sort that. Re: running rich
Yes it is normal to find them set high from the factory. Anywhere from 800-1100 OHMS is normal, though each bike is different.Sammyd wrote: is a tps usually that high, i was expecting 800 as mr honda set from the factory
The reason for this is that at the factory while running in the engine they set the TPS for "cleanest emissions" not for drive-ability or power output.
This is also why the US bikes come with shear bolts on the TPS (don't know if you guys get them) which are bolts that the heads shear off of when the correct torque is reached....or what they call "tamper-proof".....yeah right ....lol
So kind of like your A\F ratio where you can choose between longest engine life or max power (or somewhere in between) On your TPS you get "best running" or "cleanest running"

Loud pipes don't save lives, knowing how to ride your bike will save your life.

Ours come with security Torx heads

I think your both saying the same type of bolt, security torx bolts have a bit in the middle.
