Is it bad to turn off with the key?

Post by Image »

I do it coz I'm lazy. I turn my bike off with the ignition key instead of the stop button so it's always ready to start when I leap on. Is this bad for the bike?

It will not hurt anything but I always use the kill switch.
If for no other reason than to know it will work it I ever actually need it.

The kill switch is only there for emergency's. I always use the kill switch though out of habit. Sometimes I will also use it while waiting at lights to save fuel.

funny that because i went out for petrol and a blast tonight. i drove away from the pumps and got it in my head that my wallet was in my jacket pocket and i hadnt zipped it up
taking my gloves off somehow i knocked the kill switch to off and was stuck for a couple of minutes wondering why the bleeder would,nt start ?
its the first time i,ve used it in the 4 years since i have had the bike so i would say using the key is ok
nice evening for a run as the temperature had dropped

Been riding since 1979 (showing my age now) and always used the kill switch but the past 4 years or so got into the habit of using the key. Pleased to hear it causes no harm.

Have not used a kill switch on a street bike intentionally... since, well forever (that's 35 years or so)

Always grab the key and turn off, then it goes straight in a pocket. Otherwise Im apt to leave it in the bike

My mate had his CBR600 parked up in work and as I left I (meant as a joke) pressed his kill switch.

When I saw him the next day he told me that he'd had problems starting his bike and had to get the AA out! Ahhhhhh. Practical joke gone wrong (apparently mechanic didn't notice and was on his knees when mate noticed kill switch - mechanic thought he'd fixed it!). Oops.

Still think my mate Skippy is an eejit for not noticing in the first place. ..... Who needs enemies with friends like me!?

As Carl said, the kill switch original real purpose is for emergencies, there for the key switch is totally fine habit ;)

I have always switched off with the key for years, the kill switch is there for emergency situations only (like when I hit diesel, went sliding across roundabout in front of a Police traffic car on blues and twos, used switch and copper seemed impressed - not biker- when I said I'd stopped the engine as I came off)!

Think about it peeps, do cars have BRIGHT ORANGE kill switches???

I've always turned the bike off using the key and regard the kill switch as something to use in emergencies.

As others have said, it won't hurt which way you stop the engine. I nearly always used the key, except when getting fuel. I use the kill switch then so I can reset the odometer trip to zero before turning the key off.
