Replacing Loom

Post by TechyMatt »

Hi All,

I'm rectifying some issues from previous owners of the bike using non standard connectors. I have opted to use an original loom to ensure it is a standard setup afterwards.

I have managed to fix the rear of the loom but am having issues getting the rest of the loom in place. There is a block of connectors (similar to the set under the seat by the fuel tank) and i can get these to squeeze between the side of the engine and the frame.

Has anyone had experience of re-fitting a loom without needing to drop the engine?

Any advice / suggestions will be gratefully received.

Cheers

No need to drop the engine :eek2 It's an easy job but you will have to remove the front and rear fairing. It's best to also remove the airbox and carbs then the plastic cowl underneath also. This will give you access for running the TPS and Rad wires across to the other side. You may also want to drop the plastic undertray down so you can get the wires run to the rear. You shouldn't have any issues squeezing the loom from the rear and through the frame.

A few pics here of how the loom runs at the dront end here that may be of help to you as reference. http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 15#p218074

And a description of how it runs here http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... om#p217420

Hey,

Thanks for the reply.

I have successfully run the rear of the loom and it looks distinctly better than the loom it's replacing.

I cant seem to squeeze the connector blocks (the ones in the black surrounds) between the engine and frame though which is why i was thinking the engine may need to be dropped.

Did i by any chance do this in reverse? should i have started from the front?

Thanks for the links.

Cheers

me and carl worked from back to front because of a rather large alarm box that needed to be attached to the rear subframe, we didn't seem to have any problems, you certainly don't need to remove the engine, take some photos of the problem and post them on this thread....

Hi,

Im going to attempt another go at pulling the loom this evening so ill see how it goes.

The local bike shop, who are good blokes, said between £250 - £450 to do the loom as they havent need to replace a VTR loom before.

Ill let you know how things go.

Thanks for the help so far.

how much..... :eek2 :eek2 :eek2
it really isn't that tough, as carl said, take all the fairings off, go from the back to the front, as you pull out the existing loom, feed thru the new one, that way you can see where it needs to go, good luck buddy....

worst ways, carl would probably ride down to southampton and do it cheaper than your local bike shop...

I know where your issue is. It's between the plastic undertray and the frame. If you look on the left hand side of the bike by the battery tray, you will see a little half mood cut out. This is where the loom sits for the bundle of multiplugs that sit in front of the battery. The loom slide in the corner between the plastic undertray and and frame. You will find it easier if you loosen the subframe mounting bolts.

Hi All,

I have now replaced the loom (thanks to agentpineapple & cybercarl for their help) and have power to the lights but can't get here to fire. Any ideas?

I have checked all connectors are securely seated and also checked all fuses are intact but still no luck.

I'm hoping someone knows what's up.

Cheers

Does the starter turn over or is it just flat. Did you connect the coils back up.

I checked each connector I can remember. Can recall what the coil connectors look like?

When I press the starter button nothing happens, there is no noise ie starter trying to turn over and there was no noticeable dimming of the headlight.

Hope that helps?

let me get this straight, when you press the starter button, does the bike turn over but not fire, or does nothing happen?

So you have ignition and lights but starter wont spin over. The first thing to check is the stater relay on the left hand side of the subframe. There's a 30a fuse in there so worth checking that and double check your wiring. The rear coil plugs nto the loom at the bundle by the battery and the front is on the loom by the front left of the rad.

Hi,

I had checked the 30A fuse as got caught by that when doing a reg/rec swap on my previous storm.

I'm pretty sure I checked all connectors in the bundle by the battery and the plug by the rad is the kinda circular one with 2 wires that hides behind the rad? If so checked that too.

I must be missing something (other than the plot !)

Any ideas?

Mmmm Most of the connectors on the Storm can't get mixed up but IIRC there are two up front that can  check the connector from the right bar control/starter switch is connected into the correct block on the loom at the front. I'm sure I have encountered this before on AP's bike.
