Headlight/nosecone screw and housing issue

Post by VenerableArc »

Came to remove the headlight from the nosecone and I failed getting the last screw out - its one at the bottom with the bracket on it. It started to round so I got some uni-lease (a releasing agent that I use at work for helping to undoing bolts etc). This worked to a fashion. The screw finally started to turn however; its turning the threaded housing inside the plastic!!

I have tried to grip the threaded housing with a small set of long nose pliers but this isn't ideal as the surface area showing is very small and the screws were thread locked in. I am not sure where to turn next, I could try and remove the threaded housing but the would mean the headlight would only be held on by three screws in the future.

I appreciate it is hard to try and visualise without photos so will get them up after work but any suggestions on how to get the screw out would be fab  I really dont want to be buying a new nosecone.

If you can't drill it out due to the proximity of the headlight, then you might have to carefully hack it out from from the plastic. Then rebuild using plastex http://www.plastex.net and if needed another brass threaded insert. http://www.tappex.co.uk

What about dremelling the head of the screw off.

Same thing happened to me and I replaced the crappy screws with s/s allen bolts & some copper grease

Dremmeling the top off would be a good bet  it would allow better access to the threaded housing. If that fails then I will have to go down the plastex and tappex route.

I am going to have to change all of my bolts and screws this winter, 90% of them are corroded and rounded! Loving the tappex website! Thats very useful for work too!!!

Sound like you just need to pull it out .
I had the same issue with mine last winter so I just pulled all four out and then filled them with plastex then when set I drilled and tapped them .

I just dealt with this problem. I turned the screw clockwise thus forcing the brass nut out with it, then used following to replace. Worked a treathttp://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 0708445144

Now they're useful. I'll be buying a set as I have one screw held in with plastic tubing!

What size thread is it?

Managed to get the housing out by cutting a small slot out of the plastic. Just got to get some Plastex when I am ready to assemble after my headlight mod. I will be using a self tapper for this one as it will be held on by three original screws.
