petcock.

Post by vtrjames »

this is probably allready known, but i thought id share it anyway. i needed a petrol tap for my bike build and got one off a blackbird.its the same the only thing i had to do was take the diaphragm bit off and turn it 90degrees as the nipple for the vacuum pipe was pointing the wrong direction. and it has a nice plastic handle on it too for operating the tap.bolts straight to the tank with filter and o ring. :D

Not had tank off yet, does it piss petrol everywhere as can't see anywhere to turn it off, ie no 'normal' fuel tap?
I'm so unlucky that if there is such a thing as re-incarnation I'll come back as me!

Late models 01-05 lack the same 'on-off' petcock's as early VTRs

Early ones rely on diaphram operated by vacuum to stop fuel flow, also using an adjustable spanner you can turn tap flow off.

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

If you have an early one the only fuel that will 'piss out' is the residual amount in the fuel lines, assuming your vacuum diaphragm is working okay.

On a late one you have to clamp the fuel lines.

On a late one you have to clamp the fuel lines.
You can also undo the two fuel lines on the Diaphragm/Petcock which is mounted off the tank and on frame, you then lift the Diaphragm/Petcock off with the tank as one unit as you would do with the earlier models. No fuel leaking unless as you say there is a problem with the Diaphragm.

On the earlier models there is no need to turn on or off with an 8mm spanner. Just undo the fuel lines and there will no leakage. Yet again unless there is a problem with the diaphragm!!! Think of the tap as an emergency shut off tap for the Diaphragm if it fails ie a split/hole. I think the nipple under the tap is where fuel pisses out off if a failure, hence the reason for having a tap.

When removing the fuel lines all you should get is the residual fuel that's left in the lines. So no more than a tablespoon.

If you don't want to remove the frame mounted petcock then just drain the tank with a siphon. I've done it this way numerous times without any issues. The petcock is removed with the carbs if they have to come off
