Before you read about my bike, here is how she looks as a "completed" project...

Since the start of the year after my winter mod frenzy, the black beasty has covered 15k miles (all leisure miles), taken me on my first trackday, been to South of France & Switzerland, attended x7 VTR1000.org rideout events (not including numerous meet ups with fellow Stormers), eaten x6 new tyres, received x3 services, escorted a wedding car, broken down once, x4 oil and filter changes, x2 fluid changes, consumed around 500 gallons or 2,227 litres of unleaded petrol...

My mods/upgrades to date are:

With the recent talk about making threads for our projects I figured I'd like to make a thread on my bike as it's easier to keep track of things and I can add to it as I progress.

There's nothing too spectacular about the work I'm doing compared to other members pioneering mods/projects, but as it's consuming a lot of my time, resources and stretching my abilities, I personally consider it a "project"

So..

Picked up my Storm in June 2013 totally standard, 15,000 miles and good condition.



Joined the forum.

Fitted Pipewerx cans, Double bubble screen, Dunlop Qualifier 2 tyres, made up some numberboards from black vinyl and put my motocross number on.

Got to grips with the bike over summer and generally had a blast, met some great members.




When the weather turned a bit cooler after the Lunatics in London...



....I started to strip the bike down ready for some improvements...

As I dismantled the bike I took plenty of pics from various angles, for reference when rebuilding it, there's not much point in posting them all, if anyone wants any more close ups for reference I can add them

With the bike dismantled, I managed to secure (luckily) some bits and bobs from a track bike.

- Penske shock
- Revolution race tuned forks
- Coerce fork brace
- Moriwaki Ti Exhaust system
- Harris rearsets (gold)

The rear shock needed a touch up on the spring paint, so rubbed it down and gave it a lick of super durable gloss black Caliper paint


The forks needed a rub down and coat of black (I used Hammerite smooth satin black).

I also took 1mm off the top of both adjusters and re-cut the slots as they were chewed:


The Harris rearsets were pretty bashed about and gold So someone has very kindly taken on the job of sorting out the remains of them, more on that when there are developments.

After reading KevL's input on this thread on bracing the swingarm: http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=18972 I decided I need that mod!!

Welded, smoothed and powdercoated satin black and new bearings:

After reading Lloydie's wheel thread: which I can't find! I found some 6 spoked wheels, a vfr400 17" front and fireblade rear, stripped out the bearings, valves and tyres. Then dropped them off at 'Maldon shot blasting and powdercoating' for a pimp up!

Then got a new set of Dunlop Qualifier 2's fitted, new bearings too.

Fitted new taper bearing kit to steering yoke/stem and cups into the powdercoated frame and fitted it to the engine.



Then fitted the powdercoated swingarm with new bearings all round.

Penske shock went on.

Rogered forks go on, along with a coerce fork brace and my modified top yoke which butts up under the bottom yoke.

Modified top yoke, lower yoke reinforcement.. I'm not sure if this mod has any huge advantages, but after a small ammount of grinding the yoke flat it's an easy installation and requires no other modifications so it can't hurt.





On with the subframe and electrics, I struggled to work out where to route all the bits and bobs despite taking photos before dismantling. A quick request for photos and as usual, very helpful members sort me out

I put the standard headers on with my pipewerx cans and made some temporary hangers from 2mm steel which lift the cans up similar to the SP1/2 style angle:





The undertray is a cheap one from Norwich, just needs tweaking and painting:

There is a 15mm gap between the rear light and undertray which could let spray from the rear wheel in, so I bought some fibreglass bits and have a go for the first time!





Rubbed down, filled and rubbed down again.
Finished in gloss black:




Managed to swap my silver fairings and tank with much faster black ones, an easy 100bhp increase

Also aquired these fairing lowers from the Macave:

Rubbed down and repaired some cracks with my newly acquired fibreglassing skills



Finished in gloss black with new rubber grommets fitted:

Fitted lots of S/S bolts here and there.

Fitted symtec heated grip elements under new renthal medium compound grips.

Fitted waterproof powered phone holder to the stem tube hole, I'm massively impressed with the quality of this kit, bought via ebay.

Fitted eager beaver headlight relay kit, seems a high quality bit of kit

Also fitted Eager beavers PC8 fusebox kit which gives a really neat fuse box with 6 switched live connections and 2 permanent lives.

My satnav/phone, heated grips, headlight relay and led voltmeter will go on switched side. The cigar lighter socket will go unswitched for overnight charging of my bluetooth headset.

Fitted my bargain Tony.mon carbon fibre front mudguard.

Fitted new chain & sprocket kit. With coerce sprocket cover, which needs the original gasket thickness to work properly, as I found out.



Carbonadi carbon fibre engine covers.

Crash protector sliders.

Yoshimura anodised black cnc oil filler cap.

Carbon fibre fireblade 2-part chain guard:

Fitted the Moriwaki headers and cans with new gaskets, bolts and springs:



Unfortunately when the rear shock is softened right off the cans hit the top of the swingarm brace when jumping up and down on the back!
So I'm making some new hangers to replace the Moriwaki ones for now.

Cheers, I only went out for a short, cold and damp blast last Sunday since rebuilding it, so haven't had a chance to push it much, but even in a straight line you can feel the suspension is much more refined.

I could do with a hand setting it up but I got the settings fairly close to the recommendations.

One thing I noticed was the front and rear now work together, rather than fighting each other.

When you crank it over a bit, even over bumpy surfaces the fork brace and my bottom/top yoke reinforcement yoke (needs a catchier title still) seems to have stopped the flex quite a lot! And generally feels much more capable if and when pushed a bit.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the forks and shock perform when used in anger!!

Turn in is transformed with 4mm down at the front and 4mm up at the back, stability is still solid.

Yeah I agree, its turning into a very nice bike work well done Jamie. It doesn't matter about the size of what you do its about taking on a challenge which you are unsure about and getting it done right. There is nothing better than seeing a job you started finished by yourself. Again well done and I'm sure there is much more you will find to do
