Few niggles, 97 storm. temp gauge , handle bar shake

Post by lh3110 »

What's the craic with the temp gauge. As long as 30mph plus the gauge stays cold.
Only once sitting stationary or in traffic it goes up. Haven't sat long enough for it to heat up more than 1/3 and once I set off again it drops to cold. I take it that's not right?

Also between 50-55 there is quite a bad handlebar shake. This fixes itself above and below these speeds. Could it just be tyres of the bike sat for a couple months? Or something more serious?

Thabks for any help.

Cheers all.
So how do you know its up to operating temp? :D

Tyres on it at the moment are crap and kinda scary, dunlop qualifiers of some sort.
Will be changing them soon so will get wheels balanced then and take it from there.

when you say "the gauge stays cold" do you mean it hasn't moved at all? i.e extreme left?

Normal pottering about operating temp when warmed up is where it is indicated with arrow. Hot days when thrashing about can push it up to halfway. and on hot summer days in traffic can push over the halfway mark before fan kicks in.

My temp gauge has hardly ever moved in the 14 years I've owned the bike, so I wouldn't worry about it. If someone has fitted alloy bar weights, replace them with the originals. Odd at that speed, sounds like the tyres or perhaps wheel or headstock bearings. What are the pressures?

mine is pretty much the same as wicky,s although at normal running temp it indicates a little further across. mine soon warms up in traffic without the benefit of airflow. I guess it is probably quite important to check your cooling fans cut in , also check the coolant level .

Mine generally runs between quarter and half! Don't recall it really getting above half but also can't say I've had fan running :? At what point is it normal for the fan to cut in?

Same here. Sitting in traffic really makes a difference, especially in Summer. My fan kicks in just after the halfway mark.
