180 out?

Post by Theodio »

Hello fellow Firestormers!

As some of you know my bike problems, I fixed them almost all cleaning and syncing my carbs. The Bike runs great except one thing. It pulls strongly, when she reaches 5-5500 rpm has an outbreak but then doesn't pull strongly till limiter.

I simply cannot rev it with 2nd gear till the limiter like a Firestorm.

My question is Is that a symptom of 180 timing out or it is a symptom of stock needles? Mine has new exhaust, KN filter. Also I just received Dynojet kit to install!!  ? I'm asking because as I searched through the posts I see most of them saying that the bike does not rev past 7. Mine revs past 7k but slow.

I want to know before I begin removing back cover and cams.

Any help??

Try putting it 180 in the other direction and seeing if that makes a difference, and putting a standard airfilter in ;-)

I have riding one timed out, it could be that. I also rode one with the exhaust timing 1 tooth out, that went flat about the same point and would not pull past 120 mph. Worked fine once re-timed

It is a process of elimination but the engine will not work right until the valve timing is sorted, regardless of the state of the carbs. I would start with checking the timing personally and if possible I would fit stock set carbs, air filter and cans. Once right start adding the performance tweeks

That is exactly how it will behave. It does not stop dead like a limiter exactly but the needle struggles to get past around 7000rpm and rises slowly.....very slowly, as if there is fuel starvation.

Here's the solution for180 out
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... ut#p259219

But what concerns me is that you say 5-5500 rpm which is too low for 180 out which leads me to believe there is something else going on.

Disagree, 5500 is exactly as I have experienced, that's when the drop-off in performance becomes noticeable.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Tony knows these engines a lot better than I do so take his word for it. I guess that answers your question then Theo .

Thank you all for yr answers!

I drove it again today to work and reved the bike till9500 rpm. After 6500 it'll rev so slowly till 9500 and very very slow till limiter.

My Bike is from Japan as the garage guy said, it had limiters (steel plates at inlet that restricted about 15% of fuel-air) and it has limiter at 185 km/h!!!

You can replace the restricted carb inlets with standard and bypass/deactivate the instrument cluster speedo wiring that activates the ECU cutoff to achieve nominal performance (do so at your own risk- is there a licence/age restriction by Greek law that accounts why it has remained restricted). But first make sure everything is running correctly - one thing at a time so as not to introduce new problems into the mix.

Thnx again for yr answers!

The Carb guy removed the restricor plates, cleaned the carbs, he said that they're stock, balanced them, etc. Unfortunately my girlfriend bought me a present (Dynojet kit stage 1) to install, but I'm almost sure its timing issue.

The bike rus great till 6-6500 but then NOTHING. So at weekend with proper tools and proper attention (not like the last time  ) I'll check timing in both cylinders and then I'll change the timing 180 degrees:

1. align Back cylinder to RT, cam lobes facing to-wards each other
2. remove CCT to relax the cam chain
3. spin counterclockwise till i reach the RT again-cam lobes facing opposite
4. remove cams and
5. install them facing to-wards each other!

Thank you for yr precious information!!

I'll post a video with the job and of course working with my new loud pipes!

If you're cutting out at 185kmh / 115mph then it is the japanese market restriction kicking in due to a limiting chip in your speedo. Undo 3 bolts - Do you have Green Black. Black Brown. Red Green and Pink Green wires at the back of the speedo? If so get your mechanic to rule this out as the cause and fix if necessary.

Yes I believe that has to do with the performance as well.

I red something about a very simple solution, cutting two wires and coupling them. It is said that after doing that the ECU doesn't know how fast you go.

Maybe I'll try this as well.

Good morning!!

Finally I fixed my beauty!!! Its was 180 degrees out!! Oh mygod now I own a different bike!! The sound, the acceleration the smooth ride!!! I want and I will post a video!! The bad part is that I discovered a bad threading as I was unscrwing the bolts from the head cover the one was loose, I tried to screw in and was not. So I must repair the broken thread some time, as it is not a compression cover. But so many months I was riding a different bike. Wouldnt rev past 6000. Not I cannot rev it past 6000 the back tyre slicks in the 2nd gear! Mad Mad thing!!

Thank you all for the instructions and the precious info!!!
Will keep u posted with the new video!
