service time

Post by budd »

OK the plan is to tax the old girl Apr 1st so I've got a little over a week to give it a service and attend to a couple of things that have been bothering me for a while now,

Firstly the head bearings they were knocking ever so slightly last year which I adjusted out but I figure a change to tapered would be worthwhile, I’ve found some at M&P online All Balls items at £20 delivered see link I’m just double checking are these the puppies I need?
http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo.aspx ... =All-Balls

Now to servicing, the Last time it was serviced was by my local Honda main dealer and it was a proper 32K service (at 27K) they did pretty much everything hence a bill the wrong side of £500. Given it’s only covered 4K since I thinking I can get away with pretty much just an oil service and air filter, it’s on a std air filter which brings me to what oil and filter to use?
I’m thinking any decent 10w40 semi synth will be fine for the oil but looking at M&P website at the options ( it seems sensible to order everything from the some place ) first option (cheapest) is: Plutoline oil with pattern filter
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VTR-1000-FW-F ... 3cd4916e03
second option (slightly more expensive) is Motul semi synth with hiflo 'racing' oil filter
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VTR-1000-FW-F ... 1e80b2d8df
or for a little extra it as a K&N filter
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VTR-1000-FW-F ... 3cd09e4f85
or should I really push the boat out and go Motul fully synth and genuine Honda oil filter ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VTR-1 ... 2ec479540f

basically is the final option worth the best part of £25 more than the first and are there any real differences between the various filters?
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone  .

Use original Honda filter and Castrol Power 1
As mentioned above, don't use fully synthetic

so avoid cheap and nasty filters and fully synth oil
that would make option 3 (of those listed above) Motul 5000 semi and the K&N filter the favourite, K&N are a quality product and should be broadly comparable with a gen Honda.

I used Motul semi synth and hi flo filter. The hi flo is basically a pattern part copy of Honda filter. It's not true hi flo like the K&N. You also have to ask yourself is the K&N better considering it's flowing faster which most likely means it's not filtering as much.

All balls from eBay. There's a list of models they fit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-VTR-100 ... 58acd82ba3

Well to check in from the states...... Mobil 1 4T full syn. From the oils I have run this one gives the best gearbox feel (smooth shifting into every gear) and as you can tell by the amount of miles I have piled up that it works well in the engine also.

I also run a Purolator filter as it has recived very good reviews as a filter and is a bit bigger than a stock Honda filter.

Oh dear, are we turning into an oil thread  I've never tried fully synth so can't comment on it but others have had issues, also semi is cheaper :plainsmile

Hey Budd don't forget your brakes, fluid levels, cable lube and adjustments where necessary etc etc. There's a bit more to a service than plugs, oil and filters.

Sorry for the confusion guys., now been edited
By the way this is the recommendation given to me from a reputable Honda dealer if used for normal use., might be different for track day or race use.
Im sure someone will be along shortly to confirm that is the case or not
