In the exhaust first , use lube and if it don't slide in easy open the hole up a little by tapping it with a ball pin hammer till it slides in .

Be very careful tapping it with a hammer as the end starts to fray and bend which can make things difficult sliding a pipe over  A bit of lube would be better to help things slide into place.

And this goes for link pipes for end cans as well as the standard pipes?

Something slippy......Grease, Vaseline, KY

A bit of grease should do the trick. Juts don't be suprised to see a bit of smoking as it gets burnt off.
