Bleeding hydraulics

Post by kitsun »

Hi Guys

Decided to bleed all my hydraulics (clutch and brakes) yesterday. The clutch hydraulics came out black something awful. Previous owner never did change the fluid IMHO. Since I was working on my own, i fashioned up a solo hydraulic bleed tool which worked extremely well and I thought I'd share.

All you need are:-

1. Appropriate sized rubber hose that'll fit the bleed nipples
2. A 20-50ml syringe

Just fit the rubber hose to the nipple and the the syringe. Unlock the nipple and pump the master cylinder. Old hydraulic fluid will pump up the syringe plunger and you can also observe whether there are any air bubbles. If you keep the tip of the syringe pointing downwards, all the air will gather at the top and not re enter your hydraulic system. If the string is full before you finish bleeding, just close of the nipple, disconnect the syringe and empty it and reconnect and repeat. Simple and job done. This will also work if you change your hydraulic lines. Use the syringe to suck up as much air as possible. You'll know as hydraulic fluid starts to sputter into the bore of the syringe. Empty as before and start pumping the master cylinders to bleed off.

None of the pump, hold, unlock nipple, bleed, lock, pump and repeat action anymore!

Nice one  I presume you are keeping the master cylinder topped up throughout the process

The clutch reservoir is pretty small though and I managed to empty it a couple of times and got air into the system. No big deal though, as using the syringe method i managed to suck up the air out right quick.
