checking coil

Post by turbo_billy »

Took the "Legends" SP out the other night and on the ride back it dropped the rear cylinder :( . Managed to limp it home and got it running intermittently on both cylinders again but it failed again under load. Stripped all the bodywork off today and checked all wiring, plugs etc. Long story short, swapped out the rear coil with a spare and everything seems back to normal
Is there any way to check the condition of the old coil electrically to confirm that it is at fault? Damn thing looks almost brand new, as does the lead and cap.
Cheers

I think that would be tricky off the bike without the right equipment. Possibly an oscilloscope  But what is a coil, primary and secondary windings so if it's faulty it can only be a break down in the windings, maybe a dry/broken solder connection where they join or at the terminals. Shame they can't be opened up easily to check. What about the HT lead, surly that would be more of a likely cause, unless the coil has burnt out.

you could try taking a resistance reading of the known good coil and compare with the faulty one
but usual their just throw away
told you not to but oh no you knew better

You've done the best check you can. Substitution.
HT coils need to be load tested and cold checks with a meter can still give you a good impedance reading even when they are faulty. Not many garages will even have a load tester these days and they will just swap them like you have.
If you want to be doubly sure, now that you've seen the bike running, you could put the coil back in and see if it craps out on you again. at the very least it would prove it wasn't a bad connector or lead and swapping out the original coil was enough to clean up the contact.

Thanks for your replies gents. I`m happy that all seems well again after swapping the coil out. Just wondered if there was a quick static test.
And Pete, yes you are right.......if only it wasnt such a pig of a job to get at anything on the SP I would try changing them over again out of idle curiousity

Tell me about it!
If my knuckles arn't bleeding I haven't been doing anything
I've got to change the thermostat, when I pluck up the courage, but it's hard to dredge up the enthusiasm when the temps are warm enough for it not to matter to the bike

Is it really that much harder than the Storm then to access bits and pieces. Is this because of more electronics and/or the shape of the tank and tank removal. not being quite so straight forward.

Not a lot more but there are the injectors & pipe work and a bit more electrickery to contend with.
Oh, and if there is a difficult way to fasten something down, they used it
