Newcomer in London

Post by Mat B »

Hi everybody,

Here is my story. Just left France 3 months ago for London. I sold my Fazer 600 before leaving France. I am now actively looking for a new motorbike and since I am writing here, you've guessed I am looking for new sensations with the v-twin of the Firestorm.
Hopefully in few days/weeks I will be able to post a picture of it here.

Since I just arrived in the UK I am still a little bit confused about insurances which are more expensive than in France. I found Ebike which seems to be a good deal. However I am wondering if you have any advices regarding insurance especially in London ?

Thank you all. Can't wait to get my new bike!

Hello and welcome Mat, you're certainly in the best place for all Storm advice, general advice, pointless advice and micky taking  . I use swinton bikes £100 fully comprehensive with legal protection and protected no claims. Some of the London lads will be along shortly with better advice for down there

Welcome to the forum Mat

Well I don't know about better advice  Not much good asking me about insurance as I don't have a very high regard for insurance and insurance companies. I would say do a comparison site check and get whatever is cheapest to legally cover you to ride and that's it. Don't get sucked into added extras like legal cover or breakdown cover as that's either a con or used as a so called freebee to suck you into purchasing insurance with them. I would even go with a higher excess if it means cheaper.

At the end of the day theses bike are cheap enough to treat as disposable items. So if it happens to get stolen or you smash it up then buy a new one. That would work out cheaper than paying a higher fully comp or whatever else insurance over the years, plus once you start to make claims they raise your insurance costs  If you want breakdown cover then take out a separate breakdown cover with the AA or RAC or one of the other independent breakdown companies. As for legal cover your covered by that anyway if you go through the right legal sites that deal with those things if and as it's required.

Unfortunately your biggest risk living in Borough is most likely theft and/or vandalism so you better off putting the money towards extra bike security, alarm, chains and locks etc.

And here's a useful thread on here with some handy links

Would that be Peppermint or Spearmint and can I have the answer after eight

Somebody posted them links a couple of years back and I bookmarked them away. Insurance companies are as bad as the banks. Those added extras are bit like PPI and they are ripping us off.

can't offer you any advice about insurance in London.
It's no different than anywhere else accept maybe being a slightly higher premium being a big city and all that. It''s a bit of a postcode lottery. You can reduce the premium if it's garaged or locked up in a secure compound which could be interpreted as back yard, front/back garden with a lock on the gate  You could put a Thatcham insurance accredited alarm on but these don't reduce costs much, maybe £10 or £15 but it all adds up. The biggest bonus is the bike itself. These are really cheap to insure considering they are a 1000cc bike and are not as sought after in the theft market as say some of 600 sports bikes etc.

What's interesting is if you do some research on which type of jobs get better or worse insurance. Actors/actresses get cheap insurance same with artists, doctors get high insurance and too my surprise driver/riding instructors get higher insurance as they are seen as higher risk being out on the road more and potentially using their motor for work purposes.
