Hi guys,
I'm very new to bike maintenance and recently bought an 01 firestorm specifically because it has an old school engine, and I want to learn all about it so that I can survive the coming zombie apocalypse.
It is well overdue a major service. I need to do the following and want to know what gaskets and what tools I need to buy beforehand to prepare:
1. Fit manual Kreiger CCTs (they came with little gaskets of their own)
2. Check valve clearance (i have a feeler gauge, but will i need to replace gaskets during this process?)
3. Balance carbs (need a carb balancer?)
4. Replace the throttle cable (currently throttle is very stiff on right lock ans no amount of lube fixes it)
5. Front brakes
6. Anything else i should be doing?
I have already replaced all fluids, spark plugs and filters (oil and air), chain and sprockets.
I already have paddock stands, a torque wrench and other 'basic' tools.
Finally, I have a Haynes manual!
Thank you in advance!
Macca

Gaskets required for a major service?
Firstly don't follow the Haynes jets the guid on here regarding ccts swap .
Gaskets required NONE .
Carb balancers - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290587977602? ... 26_rdc%3D1
You will need a vac take off for the front cylinder too .
As for the throttle cable ,remove and bin the return cable as it's not needed and will most likely be why it's stiff .
Other things to do is
Remove and grease the suspension linkage bearing and replace if rotten .
Also worth while resetting the tps sensor to 500ohm this will smooth things out too.
Replacing the clutch and brake fluid is a good start but overhauling the calipers works wonders

Greetings
Most of those jobs are covered in the Workshop Knowledgebase section.
Also download the PDF Honda VTR Workshop manual in the section above. But as Lloyd has said skip what they say about setting up valve timing as they are in error, and instead follow the guides here.
PS Check the stater motor connection bolt under the rubber hood for corrosion.

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Re: No: 2
Doing the valve clearances you shouldn't need to replace any gaskets, as the cam cover seal is reusable.
Chris.

Reason you have a sticky throttle could indicate incorrect routing.
