flat bars

Post by budd »

After the Wales trip I'm thinking maybe I should look into fitting some flat bars, not only to ease my aging wrists but because there appears to be some performance benefits too, namely greater leverage, better vision due to the more upright riding position, and judging by the pace of some of the flat bar equipped machines on Sat there’s certainly no detriment to performance.

But before I start sourcing the required bits and bobs I’ve a couple of questions, I know I’m going to have to cut the fairing and will need replacement brake lines but what about the wiring to the switch gear? Is there enough to reach or do they need extending?

Also what are the dimensions / model No of the bars, there seem to be lots of different shapes, widths, heights, rakes/rise etc which is most appropriate?
Regarding the mounting of the bars, the risers themselves I take it you simply drill the top yoke and bolt them on ?
Any advice or links to posts re fitting etc welcome

Only wiring I had to extend was the horn wires by 2"

I put rental ultra low bars on mine , the are not the lowest as there ia a flat bar which has no rise. Then if you keep the risers below 1" then there is minimum cutting.

There is a thread with some pictures of when I did mine in the workshop section, but I can't search off the phone so hope somebody else links to it

No those risers are not good for the Storm. You want angled risers so that the handlebars don't foul the fork stanchions which stick up above the top yoke. Something like these:-

Or do what I'm toying with, and get a pair of these risers:-

Apparently with Ultra low Renthal bars and these risers you don't need to trim the fairing,

Something like that is what I'm going to try when I get around to it. Those particular ones in your ebay link don't look right to me, at a guess someone has made them up, as the distance between the front and second bolt holes (the ones I have pointed out in red ink on mine in the pic below) are so much closer together than the genuine ones like mine. So I'm not sure if your listed ones will give enough clearance of the fork stanchions. If they go cheap enough you could take a chance I guess. Another point I have just realised is the ones you listed are only fixed on to the top yoke by the looks of it using one bolt per riser. The ones I'm using, both bolts (the ones pointed out with the red lines) go right through the top yoke, meaning you have two fixing points per riser. I suppose you could use longer bolts to the ones you listed to give four fixing points, but IMO the holes would be very close together and could possibly cause a weakness in the top yoke. Personally I think I would forget the ones you listed, although of course it's your choice.

your right the 2 fixing bolt holes do look close together, and as you say could weaken the top yoke, but I'll keep an eye on them and if they go cheap enough they may be worth a punt, at least I'll have something tangible to work with, TBH I’m in no rush to get it done I’ll likely SORN the bike at the end of Sept till new year so I’ll have plenty of time to work out what’s needed and source the bits,

Good call Chris, those stepped back risers look like they would work just perfect.... I fitted mine so the Ctr of the bar is exactly above the head stock bolt, that ensures you miss the fork legs and also have enough clearance to miss the tank when the bars are in full lock

Cheers Al  I have a feeling M&P used to sell this type of risers a good while back, as well as other outlets, they are made by Genmar. I was lucky enough to pick up a used pair on Ebay. Here's a better view:-
