Brake discs and pads need some help

Post by nt1980 »

 Is it an issue if the discs are not fully on the pads.

Reason i ask is that approx 5mm of the top part of the pad is not in contact with the top of the disc seems 5mm to short this is the same on both sides.

bit late to go out and look at mine, but i would say it has the wrong discs or pads
if they wore like that they could touch each other and then the brakes would fail

Something wrong there, that should not be the case.
Is it a standard Storm front end and brakes?

I wonder if a PO has fitted replacement discs and they are undersize? The only other alternative is wrong pads.

I think i may have solved the issue well will solve the issue

I have the cbr900 92 yolks and 98 forks

I am going to change the yolks to 98 ones

The discs are wavy discs and i think these are smaller than standard ones though they ran okay with the original forks

So i will change these to for some brembo discs that match the other bike with the conversion done all ready.

Yes, that will be it.
The disc diameter is larger on Blades, and so if you have Storm discs on Blade legs the caliper position will be too far out from the spindle centre line. So the pads will, as you have found, be positioned so that they are too far our compared to the discs, or the otherway round, the discs you have don't extend far enough.

As Tony said, brake discs are 310 mm from 98 on blade, earlier forks are direct fit.

98 yokes are few mm wider, causing other issues if you are going to fit.

My other vtr came with the conversion all ready done so my idea is to just copy that to a degree so i will fit the whole 98 front then get some discs to fit like the other bike has just be a case of hunting them down

the yokes are not the problem..... based on the information provided, it's the fork lowers that are, as they are cast to clamp onto larger 310mm rotors (vs. the 298mm rotors used on the 92-97 versions). AS you are using the smaller rotors, you will need to replace the fork lowers with those used on the earlier version forks, or have some adapters made.......

good luck finding '98 discs for a decent price, check it is a 97-98 rather than 99-00 as these are different sizes too.
Don't hassle me
I'll get there at some time

rotors generations are 96-97, 98-99, then 00-03..... also, you can't fit 98-99 rotors on a 96-97 wheel as the bolt patterns are different. Not sure about the earlier years, however......

Thanks for the replies

\my thinking is to fit the 98 yokes and forks then buy a set of 98 discs and make a spacer and re drill the disc to match the vtr wheel this has been done to the track bike i have that has two sets of wheels with this mod done would that sound doable and okay?
