Yellow Paint

Post by markbo »

got some paint from RS Bike Paint (thanks Carl) and had a long chat with them there, they say that if i need Y124P then that's the right colour match and the difference on my original painting of the belly pan was due to the primer - the paint colour varies a lot depending on the primer used and if you don't use their primer it'll never match.
the grey primer i used is much darker than the one they supplied

i got some spray cans (for wattys lower fairings) and a touch up kit for the small jobs from them.
having aleady rubbed down and primed a small patch that was hidden by a sticker (which Gary had told me about) i decided to use the touch up yellow on that rather than cut it back and start from scratch.

here's the result after 3 coats and some careful sanding with 2500 grit wet n dry (i used it dry cos it's a water based paint)

Taken looking slightly up

Taken looking down

difficult to get a great photo with indoor lighting - the area around the patch comes out lighter as it on a curve but isn't actually
the repair looks pretty good looking up at it but shows more when looking down - the primer is still showing thru a bit even after 3 coats

i'm thinking of either
a) spraying a larger area (say 1/2 inch) around the repair and trying to blend it in (so far i haven't enlarged the original area)
b) cutting it right back to the start and use their primer to get a better colour match.
c) getting another sticker and putting it back over it

what's your advice?

the yellow pearl is a right PITA to paint, I tried a couple of times to and thought I'd got it something like, but under certain types of light the difference in colour is obvious, your right the re the primer but it more than just primer the pearl system cosists of 2 basecoats one white and then the yellow colour basecoat on top of that, the number of coats and amount of paint and the angle it is applied also as an effect on the final shade and how it reacts to light. All in all it's tricky stuff to get right.
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone  .
