Bump Start - Clutch Start Possible

Post by thunderbolt »

Is it possible to bump start the Firestorm?

I have heard it is almost impossible?

What are the issues?

Thanks
Cheers

Try 2nd/3rd gear and either someone helping to push or a down slope to get some momentum going - then when you dump the clutch time a bounce down on the seat so the rear wheel has some grip. Otherwise get a new battery

You could get one of those moto gp bike starters might work ? think a battery would be cheaper

Did manage to bump start one, for a mate. Garage forecourt, pretty much flat. 3 attempts, last one with 3 of us pushing 8O
Made small jump leads & now carry them under the seat. What' s the problem with your bike? Battery, starter or other issues?

It can be done, easier with a pusher but the tail plastics are fragile and pushers that don't know where to push often crack the tabs off the tail unit underneath.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

hi, VTR'S not easy to bump start.? due to.two ferkin big piston's = compression ?.

TRYING to bump start a VTR yourself on a flat road.
(1) are you built like a brick shithouse
(2) can you push 193kg's of motorcycle inxs of approx 25-40 mph.
(3) is your name superman ????
(4) more chance of seeing a rocking horse sh1t,than,any of the above,
(5) down hill 5th 6th gear 20-30mph,dump the clutch and your arss on the seat at the same time.
(6) if no hill's about,tuff sh1t.
(7) phone a friend

When my retifier failed on the Isle of Man I had to have several bump starts, 2nd gear get a bit of speed up and bob's your uncle, it does help to have a Island full of bikers willing to push mind, I'd say it would be damn near impossible to bump start one on your own unless you had the aid of a slope.
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone  .

I have had to bump start mine before when I had a flat battery. There's a slight gradient (nothing major) on the estate where I live. So up to the top, 2nd gear, clutch in and push, keep pushing, push faster  , dump the the clutch, back wheel locks up and bounces about a bit, keep pushing this time put every last bit of might into it, then suddenly broom broom :biggrin Don't stall it it or you will be pushing again.

To answer your question; I do not have any starting issues especially since I fixed the choke control knob and shaft.

But I have had trouble starting my Guzzi when cold and can only get it to start in 3rd pushing it down the hill from my place. In 2nd the back wheel just locks up.

I was curious because someone told me the VTR has a slipper clutch and I thought that maybe it would not bite and grip to turn the motor as required. And hence enable it to start.

I have done most of the mods (maintenance) that's needed on my VTR. But I still need to replace the R/R (although the one on it is the later model one with extra finning and a bit larger than the earlier model one). And maybe pull the starter motor so that it does not seize in place with all the road grime that gets on it from the front wheel. Although I have just fitted the front guard extender to it for added protection.
Cheers
Don

A bit of misinformation there. Definitely no slipper clutch as standard. For silly amounts of money there are aftermarket slippers that can be bought.
