Rear of Tank Attachment

Post by thunderbolt »

Can anyone tell me what the parts are that hold the rear of the fuel tank on. I have a bolt and nut plus one sleeve type attachment. Is that all there should be? Or are there rubber cushion parts that should be fitted in this area.

Pic of what I have.

Could someone give me a list of what the pieces are and what order they go in please? The parts fiche don't show it close enough to make out all the parts.

Thanks for help offered.
Cheers
Don

According to the parts fiche there should be two of the rubber sleeves, plus a plain washer, the rest you have. Rubber sleeves fit into the bracket on the tank and that then slips between the upright brackets bolted to the frame. The bolt then passes through all of that, with the washer and nut on the end.

Thanks for the reply.

Is the metal shouldered sleeve in the picture above part of the setup or is that a ring-in part.

I don't have any rubber parts in my setup.

Thanks

You are missing part no. 4 x2 that are in the hinge tube on the tank base at the rear

There should be 2 of those top hats that fit under the rubbers on the Front mount of the tank, they fall out easy and disappear under the airbox if your not careful.

Thanks Kat,

I have the ones for the front. Like your description (Top hat), very apt. The top hat that is in the picture is larger than the ones that fit the front of the tank. The top hat pictured has an 8mm bore and is larger all over than the ones that fit the front. I've got no idea what this one is supposed to be used for. Obviously not the rear of my tank.

Thanks

I think that size of top hat would be used at one of the mounts for the front of the tail cowling.

The only other place I can think of that has top hat spacers is Radiator mounts and Oil cooler mounts, but I think these are smaller, It's not the front of the rear cowl mounting, could it be from another bike and got mixed up ?.

Maybe the clocks have them too but again would think smaller ?

The top hats on the rear cowling take a 6mm bolt. The one pictured above that I took out of the rear mounting takes an 8mm bolt.

Because it takes so long to get parts here in Australia I decided to make up my own fitting so I can ride the bike until the bits turn up from back order. I cut a piece of fuel hose that the 8mm bolt would fit through and that would press into the coupling thingo on the rear of the tank.I then cut a couple of rubber washers from a spare car inner tube and made an 8mm hole with a hole punch to go either side of the coupling. It all fitted up quite nicely with no movement like it had before and no metal to metal contact like it had before.

I need to get some miles on it now and see if the petrol leak is evident and whether the steps I took to repair it have worked. Probably the lack of a rubber cushion at the rear did not help with engine vibration reaching the tank via the metal to metal contact.

There are a couple of photo's showing (one only) in the link below of what the top hat rubber tank mounts look like. They are similar to your metal one, only made of rubber :)

Thanks Chris,

I have ordered a couple of the rubber bushes that you provided pictures of and also a couple of the rubber pads that go along the side of the tank that rest on the alloy frame rails.

Just have to wait for them to come in now.

But can use the bike in the meantime with the home made arrangement I have fitted to the rear of the tank.
Cheers
