My 10000 miles VTR is not running well. It hasn't really been started for 2 years (after I serviced it and when it was fine). I put fuel conditioner in every 4 months but I suspect anyway that I've now got crappy carbs but advice from Carl would be useful. Symptoms are:
It started after 30 seconds. Full choke needed. Ran reasonably well but went onto one cylinder when choke fully backed off (suggests lean mix on one cylinder). Even when warm. Back onto 2 cylinders with choke 1/4 inch out. But wavering tickover at around 1100-1500 rpm and farting out of the silencers. Normally very stable (for a VTR) at 1100. When revving on a steady (very slightly open) throttle at 3000 rpm; hunts and farts. Good pick up otherwise and revs cleanly.
I suspect a blocked idle jet. The bike is standard - no carb mods (I've had it since 2002 so I know). Air filter and those little foam jobbies are all new/clean. All the pipes seem okay. I've just taken the the airbox off (down to carb mouths and took plugs out, put it back together, exactly the same symptoms.
Advice please. Carbs out and clean or something I've forgotten?

Fuel can go crap if left, it starts to sort of break back down, you can get a waxy residue and also so of the octane loses out.
Flush the tank and clean carbs and lines. That should do it.

Carbs removed. Quite clean actually. Surprisingly. Jets removed. Chokes removed. Cleaned with carb cleaner. Re-assembled. Now runs much better and on 2 cylinders and steady 1100-1200 rpm tickover. Still a bit farty though through the silencers. Think i might have upset the carb balance though as it's slightly less good on pick on very small throttle openings. Now where is the car balance section and do I have to take the b.....d air box and tank off again.

How good did you clean the pilots?BERNEV wrote:Carbs removed. Quite clean actually. Surprisingly. Jets removed. Chokes removed. Cleaned with carb cleaner. Re-assembled. There are 3 smaller holes inside the tiny hole down the center that are quite easy to get gummed up.
You might try some fuel system cleaner, as it sounds like you got most of the crud out when you did the cleaning.
Also, yes you need to sync the carbs and no there is no need to remove the airbox to do the job though installing the front vacuum fitting is much easier, if not already done, with everything out of the way

I have just logged in and seen this.
There are others on this forum that know what they are talking about unlike me.
I have arrived a little late as it sounds like you pretty much there. A good clean was the first step when fuel/carbs been sitting around for a while like that. I would suggest you ride the bike for while now, give it a good thrashing an blow the cobwebs out. As for the exhaust popping or farting as you call it. First check that you have no inlet or exhaust leaks. Carb inlet rubbers should be tight and the exhaust system should have no leaks. Any leaks in either of these, especially the exhaust will cause some popping.
