It just aint that crisp
It just aint that crisp
Ok, ive had this problem for some time, although the bike runs well throughout the rev range I'm not overly worried.
It just doesn't sound as crisp like other storms ive heard.
Now, ive run stock carb set up, now ive gone back to Dyno jet needles/mains and 45s, and running 2 lift holes
Whatever set up ive had it still doesn't respond as it should.
Like I said, no problems cruising at 40 or 50 (TPS is set ok)
it will accelerate without stuttering right through to 3 figures
It always starts well
I have no baffles in so maybe that might be my starting point
Only other thing it pops below 3k but not too bad if I richen things up a bit.
Also I get a lot of carb fart if things are too lean. (But not at the moment)
I have thumb screws fitted and set the carbs up fairly close, also k&n filter fitted (does the same with a standard filter)
I will change the plugs when I get paid next week but they are only about 6000 miles old
It just aint that crisp !!
PS I have read the carb set up guides
Any ideas ?

Re: It just aint that crisp
could your cam timing be a tooth out ?

Re: It just aint that crisp
Just before I bought the bike, the ccts were done, never gave it a thought,
Ill look into it, cheers

Re: It just aint that crisp
As Popkat says, one tooth out on the valve timing will give that effect of the bike not sounding quite as crisp as it could be, it might be worth checking,
Chris.

Re: It just aint that crisp
I have a few hours spare tomorrow, might as well check it and check the valve clearances as well

Re: It just aint that crisp
I had the exact same symptoms on the bike for years when I bought it. The Auto CCT's were replaced by a previous owner and the bike was 1 tooth out on the exhaust cam only, front cylinder.
I thought the popping and everything was normal but when I replaced them to manual CCT's and corrected the timing, the bike responded and sounded differently by quite a bit.

Re: It just aint that crisp
Sounds like it's a guaranteed timing issue.
Just remember to soak the two timing case (viewing) bolts well with WD40 prior to removal, the big aluminium one for turning the crank can be a bugger to undo.
I had to tap mine with a small tack hammer around the edge before I could get it to move

Mine was the same after today !Strathern wrote:I had the exact same symptoms on the bike for years when I bought it. The Auto CCT's were replaced by a previous owner and the bike was 1 tooth out on the exhaust cam only, front cylinder.

Both CCts also were way too tight.
Checked the valve clearances as best as I could with the rubbish feeler gauges I had,
however I'm sure they were around the 0.15 (inlet ) 0.30 (exhaust) give or take the tolerances given !!
Fired up and things are loads smoother, also ticked over nicer at 1k revs.
Am looking forward to my run out tomorrow !!!

Re: It just aint that crisp
What I meant to say, mine was 1 tooth out on the front, exhaust !

Re: It just aint that crisp
PS To remove the timing cover cap I use the spark plug hexagon(the one that comes with the tool kit). give it a tap and then undo with a 10mm spanner !!
