Worth adjusting the clearances?

Post by Seeker 77 »

So following on from my random issues, I did the clearances and these are the values. I know that number 5 needs doing but what about the rest? They seem a little on the tight side?

I'm hoping not to find something like this underneath 8O

No, just the one you've spotted.

All others within tolerance, so although ideally all should be in the centre of tolerance it really makes no difference at all, road or dyno.

They drift out of setting so slowly you'll get another 10K before any others need doing.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

And if you're not at the recommended 16,000 mile service yet Mark, you'll probably find that number 5 will be in tolerance if you have a few thousands miles to go if you check it then,

Thanks chaps, although it begs the question, what is wrong with the fecker for me to be seeing detonations as per the video in my other thread!? Surely it can only be knackered valves or timing out?

Probably normal.
The Carb cough or fart is exactly this, an ignition of the intake mixture before the inlet valve fully closes.
It can be a poor seat on one of the valves, a very slightly bent valve, but they do it anyway, even if everything's OK.
So a compression test is needed or just pull the head off and physically check.
You'll find it's more likely to backfire like this with the airbox off.

I can send you out a compression tester with the correct fittings if you want to do the easy check

I would agree, do a compression test.

I've just been listening to your video you posted in another thread ( ). I see when the carb coughs you can see the fuel mixture ignite on the front carb, can you see the fuel ignite the same on the rear cylinder :?:

Well, found a problem with the choke, the cable was stretched meaning he bike was running with the choke on permanently even when I thought it was in. Put it all back together and I have a far more serious problem. When I started it there was another fart and now there is a knocking sound within the engine. Both CCTs are intact though, so it is going back to the dealer on Monday. I'm done with chasing errors and this one sounds like an expensive one.

Gutted :(

Let's see how you get on with the dealer.
But if they can't or don't Want to sort it it isn't expensive, bent valves are an easy fix, about £120.

Thanks Tony, Chris and AMcQ, you remind me why I was so happy to come back to this forum

So I resigned myself to taking all the things I'd added to the bike off to go back to the dealer, put the PAIR back on, swapped the cans back to standard, indicators and all the other stuff. Rolled I t back into the garage and thought I'd give it one more shot to make sure I hadn't missed a connector and it started fine, ran fine, and a spin around the block confirmed it rode fine 8O

Clearly something in the above mods it did not like, and so I shall ride it as Honda intended for a while to make sure all is still well. Thanks again for your kind offers of kit, services and the like, it is very much appreciated. If ever I can return the offer I shall. For the moment though, all is well again in VTR land!!

it could be something as simple as a trapped hose, a wrong connection etc, try 1 of the mods. ride it, do another if its ok etc. Common sense approach sometimes can work!
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!
