I use paraffin as it de greases but leaves an oil residue and won't harm the o rings

I was oilways (like what I did there haha) told not to use paraffin, petrol, white spirit and such as yes it gets it clean but also gets in between the links and removes the grease from the o rings leading to seized links. I always use a chain specific cleaner followed by a chain spray, leave for half hour then top off with a chain wax. WD40 do a good cleaner and lube, not cheap about £12 a can but you look after the chain and should be good for the life you have the bike for.
If it aint broke, get your bloody hands off it!

I work in an industry where we use a LOT of white spirits (tanker loads), and borrowed a half liter for the purposes of chain cleaning. Did a great job, then a few months later I noticed an o-ring broken and hanging out of the chain. Over the next few months a lot of the o-rings fell apart. This was on a newish (<5000km) DID x-ring chain that I had fitted and previously only ever applied Motul chain lube to. Moral of the story: industrial grade white spirits is probably not a good chain cleaning choice if you like your o-rings. YMMV :D

Whatever you wash it with it needs to be thoroughly washes off again with something that won't damage the o or x rings.
Actually, I use Gunk but wash it off with water- it's water soluble so it's easy to know that the chain is clean of solvents before adding lube. Mind you, I use a Scot oiler to try to ensure that the chain will have some lube added through the commuting week.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
