reverse bleeding

Post by agentpineapple »

now my clutch lever has arrived, i'm going to give reverse bleeding a try, my question is this, once I remove the reservoir cap, do I need to hold/cable tie the clutch lever open, before I push the fluid thru from the bleed nipple?

no, leave lever as it is.

Last few times, when I changed brake fluid, I just sucked fluid from each braided hose by bleed nipple on caliper, than attached piece of hose with pot on !loosen! nipple, and just filled reservoir until it was full. Then I just pumped the lever and fill the reservoir again, until there were no bubbles seen on hose attached to bleed nipple (still opened all the time). Finally I tightened bleed nipple and checked operation.

This was the easiest, fastest, and most effective brake fluid change for me, I want to try it on clutch as well.

I've never had much luck reverse bleeding clutches. My Superduke user manual said it was the only way to properly bleed a hydraulic clutch but it never seemed to work very well for me. I do what Stephan says and just treat it like a single caliper.

That said I did have some luck when replacing my master cylinder on the GSXR. I took the calipers off and pumped then until the pads met. Swapped master cylinders (bit of spillage) then forced the pads open again. Refitted the calipers and then topped up the fluid as I pumped the pads back out.

here's a bit more of the story, i'm bleeding the clutch, which has had all the fluid removed, so it's bone dry, I assume it's still ok to reverse bleed it?

It is if it works.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

It'll be fine. Push the new fluid up from the bleed nip.

Keep an eye on the pot it's small & easy to over fill.

Once the pot is full try it...chances are it wont work...So then bleed as norm for a bit to expel any trapped air.

Top tip... Before you start any bleeding take the clutch rod right out & give it a good clean & a go over with a scotchbright pad/fine emery along the whole length you may have to note the way the rod comes out as I believe the ends have a diff profile... ( rod, length, go over...insert smut here...)

Oh & dont forget the brass wotsit doobrie in the clucth lever the new one may not have one...

If it's completely dry you shouldn't really be gravity bleeding as you may well create an air lock in the pipe, i.e. the air wants to move upwards but can't as there is fluid in the way. I had this ont he KTM which is wen I got the manual out and did it properly

it is exactly for my decribed procedure, if it was understandable :) My theory is, that on completely open system, all bubbles can naturally go out up to reservoir or nearest point, because there is no pressure locking them in place.
I didn't try it on clutch yet, but assume it could work. Never had luck with reverse bleeding.
