Is it possible to put front calipers back together wrong?

Post by freeridenick »

Just tried to replace all the seals in the front calipers and found I've got A pistons opposite B pistons when I was expecting A opposite A.

Also found three A pistons and two B pistons pitted below the dust seal and nearly to the oil seal in some cases. So that's new pistons too. Seems like ordering parts before stripping results in increased shipping costs.

Do you mean small pistons opposite big pistons? Have you put one half of the left and one half of the right together as one?

In regards to the pitting, sounds like the dust seals went a while ago so make sure you replace all dust and oil seals as well

I have a spare pair of std Storm calipers if you need them.

I haven't stripped, cleaned and rebuilt with new seals, though; they're just as they came off the bike.
But they were working well; I removed them as I put a blade usb front end and calipers on.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I haven't split them, looks like some other number's mistake. The pistons come out without the need, but yes small opposite large. That's wrong, right?

Thanks for the offer Tony.mon. Looking at £100 for new pistons so I'd thought a used set of calipers might be better value. Will drop you a pm.

From what I remember when I stripped mine, yes opposite pistons should be the same. If they have mixed up the halves then you would have had only 2 pistons on each caliper working as the fluid would not have got through to the other half due to the hole being on the wrong side. Why did you decide to strip the calipers?

Stripped them because they've been stood for several years. Clutch and brake master cylinder boots were knackered, clutch slave was stuck etc. Basically I'm replacing everything as a precaution.

Sounds like they've been put together incorrectly as two pistons on each caliper were a bugger to get out. Is there a special tool to undo the bolts to split them?

I replaced my bolts but I believe you need a star/torx socket piece to undo the bolts.

Halfords or ebay sell the individual sized star/torx socket needed to dismantle the calipers.

And you can replace them with hex/allen headed bolts

That makes more sense looking at the options on the Halfords website.

I got the pack of 6 on a rail from halfords, E6 - E14. Quite cheap and covers you for other jobs as well.

You might be right, I could go into the cave & check but quite frankly I cant be arsed to move four Storms to get to the tool box...

It doesn't matter now Mac, well not for VTR Phoenix, as he has bought a set of Torx sockets :)
