First V-twin
First V-twin
Hi guys! I'm looking at getting a Firestorm. Always thought about it but always stuck to fours. I've had all the usual stuff. CBR600, Fireblade, R1, GSXR1000. I've currently got a Fazer 600 with full luggage to go touring on but only done 300 miles in the past year, so no point keeping that. Anyway I live in Somerset and so have some lovely, if badly surfaced, roads. Don't want to spend loads on suspension mods to cope with it so figured a Firestorm should be fine. Thing is, I'm a little concerned about the ccts. Don't want to buy a bike then spend a few hundred sorting out. Are they as bad as people make out? Anything else to look out for? Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard buddy
CCTS are a simple job, takes a few hours and there are guides on how to do it, I am sure someone will come along and show you a link
You may have someone local that is willing to guide you
It all depends on your mechanical skills
I think you will find that when people have been reluctant to tackle the job they get some help and then realize just how easy it it, following the guide
It will be good to check/change the regulator as well
Someone will be on soon with more info I am sure

Thanks matey. Regulator is standard Honda thing. The blades reg blew up and took half the fuse box with it. Lol.I generally don't do engine work on bikes myself. I'm happy to do it on cars. I think it's the size thing. I've got a 66 Mustang and do just about everything on that myself.
Re: First V-twin
the CCT is a risk, but not a massive one....... the problem is when they go they don't give any warning and they will cause bent valves. of a 4cyl bike you can generally get away with it.
as for the fix, if you can work on a mustang, the storm engine will be fairly familiar... its old school and everything is big and chunky.
doing the stopper mod will cost you nothing and makes the CCT failsafe, this is the solution I prefer and I am 50,000 miles in without the CCT failing...... but because I have the stopper I don't ride in fear

Re: First V-twin
I had no mechanical skills what so ever but tackled the cct's on my own with the step by step guide on this site.I was quite amazed at how easy it was,but i was warned not to press the starter until i had turned the motor over by hand first. If it didn't turn over by hand then something was wrong. When i had done the job i pressed the button and it fired up.Happy days.If i can do it anybody can.Good luck. The vtr is a fantastic blke, enjoy.By the way hello and welcome to the forum.

SO WHEN DOES THIS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER KICK IN

Welcome!
IMHO I changed mine at only 20,000 miles as I heard they are most prone to failing on the overrun from high revs.
I your giving it beans a lot I would change it sooner rather than later. It's easy enough to do but don't rotate the engine with no tension on the cam chain, learn't that the hard way!
