Bbq question

Hola all.
Right, in these self isolate times the head wanders
What I really really want is to have a spit roast bbq set up.
The pit is easy to set up, I'm going down the 45 gallon drum route, but the turning mechanism is questionable

So thoughts so far are:
Get down to the scrappy and get an old windscreen wiper motor and arms, have those on to the spit skewer and have horizontal over the barrel. I'd really want a vertical set up but not there yet.
So, what could I use to control the turn rate?
All sensible ideas please?
