Charging issues

Post by Donut 77 »

I’ve been through VTRDark comprehensive checklist.

Battery is fine, generator is fine. All earths and connections good.

Voltage measured at battery with bike revving doesn’t change from 12.7 so all tests point to regulator/rect.

My question is:

1) Is there a newer charging system that I might consider.

2) if not, does anyone have anything to say regards the OEM R/R vs the cheaper £20 ones on fleebay?

Thanks folks..

Ah brilliant, thank you Mac.

Any suggestions on MOSFET ones? I’ve looked but there’s none directly listed I can see.

Incidentally, I’ve sold my triumph, so this is the only bike in our household now. As such, it will be receiving sone love.

Starting with obviously a new R/R and swiftly to an exhaust upgrade.

Thinking dominator 🤔

I use BMW S1000r ones pick em up on ebay for 50ish... Unpick the connector block & use the standard connectors.

There are plenty out there none will be plug & play you will need to do some rewiring & check the connector blocks for heat damage, including the one in the bunch behind the tank, the 3 yellow wires from the stator.

There's a dude on FB Matt Bikes who does kits.

Thanks Mac.

In my limited understanding of electronics, the original Vtr ones are diode rectifiers but these you suggest are transistor right?

The bmw ones I can see on eBay are brand new, but not OEM - they all say ‘direct replacement’ or such. Do you think they are ok?

Also, what’s interesting me slightly is that the genny chucks out 20v at 1000rpm. Then multiples of this, so at 4k there’s 80v between windings. When it only ever needs to be 14 or so. I’m curious why they designed it this way!?

I’m sure they knew what they were doing 😆 I’m just trying to further my knowledge

TIA

I’ve just gone to remove the old R/R and as you can see, two of the three yellow stator wires have burnt out and the third is black.

Does this suggest a fault elsewhere?

The voltages checked out on each coil of the genny.

I’d like to know that a replacement won’t also do this.

Cheers.

You can tell it's a genuine BMW one if it has the mounting plate on it...

If you need an RR I have one spare. It's meant for lithium batteries but should be fine on lead acid too. I can probably find some old wires to splice in too. ImageImage

Mac I just bought that one, where do you buy the connectors from?

EDIT - I found these from UK supplier look good. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276333040083
