Riding Ireland

Post by BarryH »

Been there before to see the outlaws, yes the bloody woman I married is a mick, and have seen loads of Brit registered bikes over there. I did drive a few good roads in the hire car and thought to myself "should be doing this on the bike".

Anywhere worth going to ride/look at. Have seen one road up in the north called the Antrim Coast road......that looks well worth doing.

Thoughts...........

If you are down south, possibly coming by ferry into Rosslare, then the N25 to Cork is a great road for the bike... it is a 'main' road (by Irish standards) but its very scenic,
Sure let us know whereabouts you'll be and I cant point to you to some good ones!

I am sure you are aware that Irish roads arent the best in some places. They have certainly improved over the last few years but watch out on the smaller ones as they can be poorly maintained. Oh and bring your rain gear :)

The one big thing to watch out for are Irish cage drivers. Ireland is one of the few countries where you can fail your driving test... and then drive home! If you are on a motorway/dual carraigeway, I will guarantee you will be amazed at the amount of right-lane hoggers. In a lot of cases overtaking on the left will be required. Illegal yes, but cage drivers have become so bloody arrogant over the last few years.

There is also a low risk of being nabbed by the law for speeding as garda (police) enforcement is very low. - not that I am encouraging you to speed...

You surprise me regarding Irish drivers. Last time I was there I recall every car I came upon pulling over into the left hand lane to let me pass. I know the midlands area around Athlone as thats where the wife is from. Last time over I came back the long way and over the Dublin mountains up from Avoka (sp) The place where they filmed that prog Bally Kiss My butt or something. Never watched it myself!

Also run down from Athlone to Limerick which I remember as being a fairly good road. May be over mid to end of september, see how things go.
