Camchain Tensioners

Hello, just bought a vtr, I've read about the cct problem a few times, but have a question. The last owner had them changed by the dealer it was bought from, less than 500 miles ago (receipt for it too), and now have these, which I'm presuming are standard type?
My question is surely now they've been replaced with new ones, Honda would have made them failsafe, after older problems and now not require manual CCT's?
Or is the consensus they're exactly the same - shite?

Honda wont admit there is a problem and have not made them fail safe so you either need manuals or do the stopper mod, btw not sure if its just the picture but they look like they have had a hard 500 miles

Best replace pronto with manual CCTs for complete peace of mind (search for bazza or Krieger alternatives) and check your R/R is upgraded.

Is there a link to swapping them over? I don't like doing engine stuff, but have no faith in shops doing it, after knackering up a zx9 for me a long time ago!

You reckon it's still better to do them then?

Stopper mod will give you peace of mind, and still allow you to run the Auto tensioner. there is also a thread on this as a sticky in the knowlede base section of the workshop

Thanks for the link, if a piece of rod is inserted to 'bridge' the gap as illustrated, I'm presuming that the tensioner still tensions automatically, but now has the benefit of not 'backing out' at the wrong time?

yes, the tensioner will still work to remove more slack, and also to move back slightly to compensate for dynamic and thermal changes in normal use, but if the spring fails, it can only go back till it hits the stopper.

The reason it cant be done as a production solution is that it will be a slightly different length for every cam chain set up, and also you need it to have stabalised [initial strech and bedding in] before taking the measurement for the stopper.
