If you have 48 pilots you will find the mixture to be approx 2.5 turns. But these are approximate and you will need to fine tune maybe 1/16th to 1/4 maybe 1/2 turn in either direction according to other settings. There is no set setting.

Give the K&N a go, try the bigger mains, maybe shim the needles 1or two washers, then set your 48 pilots at 2.5turns and go from there. See how that feels.

Keep notes of everything you do and how it affects things so you can always revert back if needs be. And as Lloydie keeps reminding me, change one thing at a time, try it, then alter as accordingly. Once you start changing too many things at once it gets hard to know what affect one thing is having on another.

You could even become a carb addict like me.

Cheers my mate, I love that you dont answer with a one word answer  it's all sinking in slowly lol! Cheers dude ;-)

I thought the gear linkage on the r1 went above the gear change lever .
Not below like the storm
Yep. But the reason these were cheap was that the levers need to be replaced due to some bending damage.
Harris are good for spare parts, so I can get whatever levers I need to make them function correctly.
I just needed the back plates and heelguard sections, with intact pivots, for positioning purposes, so these fit the bill nicely.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

As my 50s pilots came today I thought I might as well pop them in .
After hours of messing with the mixture many test runs I gave up and went back to the 48s.
It just wanted to bog down with the 50s
And it didn't pull any better :-(
But it did reduce the popping on over run bellow 3k but not by much .

Very ill today, so ill i shat my pants trying to get to the toilet in time which is something I've not done since being in a nappy as a baby

Think I'm going to have to ring in work sick :( don't like doing it only done it a few times in the 3 + years I've been there and really notice it when pay time comes around.

two of the clamps are not with the delivery that should have been included with the radiator fitting :(

Also didn't think there would be bugger all wires with the gauge so going to have to get some wire and some sort of in-line fuse i think?

any one recommend what type of wire i need or should use and the best type of fuse?

Thanks

:Toilet1:  Sorry Seb couldn't resist , get well soon mate.

Lloydie apparently the 50's work best with a full exhaust system, not sure why Factory pro has started supplying them cause they used to supply 48's. I've still got the 50's in mine but the fuel screws are only about 1.5 turns out and it's not perfect. But I'm not working on that part of the circuit yet so not bothered at the moment. I may end up putting 48's or even 45' in. Don't know yet.

Today I added a 20thou shim to the rear needle. Went for a ride and can't say I noticed much difference in the midrange but the slight needle fluctuation (from non accurate mixture screw) at idle seemed to level out. I took the diaphram out and added the shim without taking the carbs off the bike. So still playing with my needles, once that's done it's onto pilots.

I washed my bike and all my gear........

By washed I mean I rode through a thunderstorm

Broke the side pod on my Arai helmet cleaning it at work Sunday (was a busy day  ) - got a new set off eBay and a smoked visor as my original clear one was pretty scratched. Wow - not so much day riding as night, darkens things a bit but really reduces glare from knobs in cars with full beam on. (Road legal smoked, not dark smoked)

Fitted a new pinlock too - I would vote for that as one of the best inventions - ever!

I have just got in with a big grin on my face :biggrin

Adjusted the needles in my carbs onto the 2nd clip from the bottom and upped the mixture screws slightly richer and the bike goes like a rocket. Nice and smooth right through the rev range with no hiccups or flat spots. The only thing I could complain about is the idle is not perfectly smooth yet, still a bit of stutter, so mixture is not quite spot on. Will have a go at that when my screwdriver arrives in the next couple of days. It's probably only a 1/4 of a turn off. But I need to seal one of my exhaust link pipes which has a slight leak which don't help. The 50 pilots seem to work well being rich and the slide leaner to compensate.

So my current carb setting are as follows:

Factory Pro Jet kit
K&N Filter
Front carb
180 main
50 pilot
needle clip 2nd from the bottom
A/F 2.0 turns out

Rear carb
182 main
50 pilot
needle clip 2nd from the bottom
Added 20thou Shim
A/F 2.1/4 turns out

Standard emulsion tubes in both carbs

Bike seems really good just a slight bit of fine tuning here and there and I will be ready for a dyno run. I would like to replace the shim with a 10thou shim rather than the 20, just got to find one. Fine tuning is going to be tricky and I'm not sure I am going to feel much of the subtle changes, so will have to go with dyno results. The dyno will probably tell me to put 48s in and richen up the needles.

For now I am very happy with the results.

well done Carl, you can take the rest of the day off.

have you got an estimate of the number of times you have had the carbs off in the last 2 months.........got to be close to 100 time.......you have more patience than me, I would get frustrated and get a dyno man to do mine

Does it want to 'GO' right from low revs?

Bet you feel great!

I have had my own carbs off 10 times up to now. So not bad really considering the learning curve involved with it. And the bike pulls cleanly through the rev range. I'm finding I can pull higher up the revs in first gear which is cool when pulling away at lights. The rev counter shoots up past the pilot circuit up to about 6thou and then it's time to change gear. But that's pushing it and it wont help fuel consumption. If I get bored I have BSM's carbs still to get right. Those billet stacks are causing me grief. Think I have it sussed now though.

I've only been out for a 20min test run around the streets of Guildford and a bit of A roads. I have yet to get on Motorway type environments and then I can give it a thorough going over where I can play a bit and concentrate on the revs more. It not easy on the street with cars and lights all over the place.

I could probably tinker a little bit more, but I don't see the point really until I get the af readings off a dyno run. I will just sort my exhaust out next and get the mixture and idle spot on.

Gonna take my headers off next week and with a wire brush on drill shall polish them up. Sort out the broken stud, fit new copper gaskets and fix my link pipes once and for all properly. Gun Gum is just stupid and only works temporally and is messy. I'm going to seal them with heat resistant silicone and clamp down with possibly new clamps nice and tight. I might even see if I can get the original Honda exhaust gasket to slide over the mandrel bend and get that fitting more snuggly. Al, do the original gaskets slide over the outside of the header or on the inside. I have never had original cans so don't know. Have you got any idea what the diameter of them is?

Carl the lower the needle clips the richer it gets .
So you have raised the needles ?

My mistake higher is what I meant toward the blunt end. Doh

Oh hold on this could be confusing because if you play your cards right, lower could mean lowering the needle into the carb leaning it out or higher could mean lifting the needle out the hole richening it up.

So it depends on whether one is talking clips or needles.

needle clip 2nd from the bottom, bottom being the blunt end.

Higher, Lower, No Higher

So just so I understand this right what you have done is!
Lowered the needles 2 clips to lean it off in the mid range right ?
And how many fishes is that now in total
