Help! - Access to timing marks

Post by mr.john.coates »

Right, I've started my CCT work but I can't move the central cap to gain access to the end of the crankshaft.
I've soaked it in WD40, put an extra long extension bar on the allen key (actually an 3/8 drive Allen socket) but all this does is chew up the metal.

Before there were no flats left I've had an impact driver on it for about 1/2 hour, hitting as hard as I dare. I've tried gentle heat from boiling water - don't want to get blowlamp on it - and I've tried tightening it a bit to break the threads.

My only thought now is a proper impact wrench - but I don't have one :(

Any other ideas?

Thanks, J

Undo all the bolts and remove the complete generator cover.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Try soaking in WD40 then have a go. Or as said remove whole cover. If your stuck for tools or anything I am not far from you (near Derby)

Success !!! :D

I followed Tony's advice and drilled 4 x 5mm holes around the edge of the cap to give purchase to a punch and drifted it round. It was very tight and clearly never been off before. I hope all the fasteners aren't like this, I don't like big hammers around my bike. Had to give it much welly !

Thanks for the advice and thanks esp to alternative_vtr for offer of assistance and tools.

Now on with the rest of it...

Sometimes just going away and coming back to it helps  glad you got it done.

No, it won't undo by itself while your back's turned.

Going away and coming back with a bigger hammer helps, though.

I've had round one with mine. Not got started on round two yet. Going to need a bigger hammer I think.

I'll probably drill two holes in it around the edge then use a bicycle cassette cage removal tool thing to try and take it off, or just a bit of metal with two small bolts in it.

Try an angle grinder centre nut key, they have two rods sticking out; if you drill the holes in the right places......
