HELP I've broken it!

Post by Steve.Storm »

As the weather is begining to turn colder now I thought I'd get my vtr ready for winter and check it over, also still trying to find out what the metallic click/rattle is when it is leaned side to side. I've decided to strip every thing off from fairing to exhausts so I can clean and protect parts. In the process I've sheared off both front exhaust header bolts, I was planning on replacing them, but is the only way to get it off to drill out the old bolts? Won't this damage the thread in the engine block?

Thanks for help in advance and of course any funny comments which will brighten up the problem :?
Got room for one more if you still wanna go to Aspen

Weld a nut on them or any stud that's left over,
spray in wd40 or similar and apply heat, as the two metals warm up at different rates it may help some sink into the thread,
spray some more leave it a few hours then attempt to take it out

You may get lucky with Seb's method, but the chances are you will end up getting the drill out. If you use a drill bit slightly smaller, so just outside the threaded area you wont damage the thread. You will have to drill it square on though and get lucky. Then the new bolts should just thread themselves on to the existing thread. I had problems drilling mine out, couldn't drill through it, so gave up and ended up getting a couple of spot welds to hold the pipe on.

I'll have to tackle mine eventually and I expect the studs to snap.

I intend to drill them out and use a Helicoil to 'replace' the thread. Have used these at work a lot and they are great.

This video explains it. Sorry about the Hillbilly

Rob, dont try and undo the nuts, use a nut splitter then you will have no problems

Steve try getting a nut welded on, that might work

If you do have to drill the studs out, my top tip is to file the end of the stud flat parrallel to the head, then center punch you mark to start drilling. There's nothing worse than trying to rescue someone else's bodged start when trying to get something out.

How much do you have sticking out? You might have some luck with stud extractors (They like clamp onto the stud and get tighter the more you turn).

You need probably a minimum of ~20mm though.

It's a bugger though because unless you get a good depth in with a pilot hole (don't neglect this stage!!) the drill will want to wander to the softer head metal. Take your time, lube up and heat up if you're going to have a go at extracting, if you're going to drill + helicoil, take your time and MAKE SURE YOU'RE CENTRAL!!

Ok

What nut splitter do you recommend for a flange nut?

Would you replace the nuts with different ones?

Am I likely to need a new gasket (between pipe & head)? (18291-MM8-880)

I would like a couple of packers 18392-MG7-750P. Any alternatives apart from David Silver ones at £6 each?

Sorry for all the question

My pipes are a bit rough, with a cleanup and paint they should hopefully last a few more years. I used to clean them with Autosol but it's a bit past that now

Thanks, worth getting some anyway for that price

Anyone used High Temperature paint on the pipes? Does it last?
