Re: Exhaust hanger?
Cheers for the vids! Sounds good, I will attempt surgery on my exhausts this weekend!
So if I use a hole saw slightly smaller than the outer hole and pull out the rear baffle that's a FULL bafflectomy??
I don't need to pull the front baffle out?
Cheers!

Have a read through this thread http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... my#p204024 it should give you some ideas of how to go about it. And here's another useful link http://www.burniemorgan.com/motorcycles ... afflectomy

Re: Exhaust hanger?
So I put the exhaust brackets to the outside of the footpeg hangers, the exhausts look really far apart now, too much to be right I think.
I found a few pictures of storms which show the bracket to be on the inside of the footpeg?!
I've put the right hand silencer to the inside of the peg but the left hand is a bit of a struggle to get in the same position.
I've also damaged one of the gaskets wiggling it about, so have had to order a fresh one!
If anyone has a storm with standard cans could you let me know which side the brackets are mounted?
There are 2 brackets each silencer and they are on front peg and rear peg hanger!
I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to things like this, so I won't be happy until its right!
Cheers in advance!
Ben

Try em both on the inside instead and see if you like em like that.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

This picture is from the brochure. Shows the right can is bolted on the inside. It's the left I can't find pictures off.

Re: Exhaust hanger?
Its not had different headers at any time ? Had the same problems with an SP1 I owned until i realised the headers were not standard .
Re: Exhaust hanger?
To get them lined up properly you need to slacken the whole system off, header studs, rider footrest bracket mounts and the three joints in the system.
There's quite a bit of slack in the system itself, because the link pipes can push onto the system with a fair but of adjustability. That's why sometimes a bike appears to have one exhaust wider than the other.
To properly set up the exhausts symmetrically:
Mount your cans so that they are symmetrical, if you lie a slimmer look then mount them inside the peg mount.
In order to get them onto the riders footrest brackets with them mounted on the inside, you'll need to slacken the footrest brackets themselves, fit the cans, then tighten up the footrest brackets again.
Don't forget the big SA bolt that goes all the way through the SA and through the large hole in each riders footrest bracket.
Now you can tighten up the clamps, and finally the header studs.
But unless you've already tacked the header studs you stand a reasonable chance of snapping one.
Use a nut splitter to avoid this happening.
For this reason, (well, that and the cost of the graphite seals) I'd be tempted to live with it if it isn't leaking. You can't see the position of the exhausts when you're riding anyway, just park it nose out in your garage and you won't notice it again.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: Exhaust hanger?
Thanks for the detailed response, I will give it a go to get them both mounted on the inside, if it ends up being a nightmare to get the header bolts undone I won't risk it and will leave as it is! Cheers!

Re: Exhaust hanger?
I managed to loosen all the clamps and brackets for the exhaust system, I took the left hand footpeg off and got everything rock on and symmetrical. Tightened it all back up with the brackets on the inside. Looks spot on now and the link pipes are all the way home now, not blowing at all.
While I was at it I did the full bafflectomy! Sounds like a beast now!
Thanks for all the advice!
Cheers!

Re: Exhaust hanger?
Benno,
I'm certain for standard cans the brackets on the silencers are meant to be on the inside of the hangers for both sides. I had the same problem with my bike when I got it, and being a fussy bug*er like you I just had to get it right
It looks like you got there in the end
Chris.
