Changing rear shock. What to check at same time?
Changing rear shock. What to check at same time?
I will be changing my rear shock soon
As I will have gone to the effort of taking stuff apart to do the job, is there anything else that can/should be changed/serviced at the same time?

The linkages give them a good look over .

I would replace the bearings in the link too. There are about 3 or 4 to do.

I would say check the bearings in the swing arm and pro link for plenty of grease, also check or replace the graphite bearing in the engine casing where the swing arm goes through.Flatline wrote:I will be changing my rear shock soon

Wicky's wore out and started knocking but solved the problem when he fitted his Ohlins, think there is a picture on here of the bearing in question.

About the needle roller bearings in the alluminun triangle linkage. What is the best tool to extract them as they are really soft & collapse easily. I know have already attempted on a spare linkage??

I took mine to a workshop so they could get pressed out and new uns inserted.

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I just used a socket that was about the same size, put it into a vice and hammered it through, it's quite easy.darkember wrote:About the needle roller bearings in the alluminun triangle linkage. It's much harder to get the new ones in. I had to put the bearings in the freezer and heat up the link in the oven. Even then it took quite a few good smacks with a hammer on a wood block to push it into place.

Re: Changing rear shock. What to check at same time?
That sounds barbaric. Also there looks to be a raised ridge in the long section of the triangle which will mean hammering it through with a socket not possible.

Hammering the old one out really wasn't that hard.darkember wrote:That sounds barbaric. Also this means you will need to hammer the old bearing all the way across the long section of the triangle, not a pleasant prospect.
Getting the new one in is the hard part.

See this Flatty

You need to be replacing numbers 20 (4 of) and 18 (1 of). Might also be worth changing 19 if you dont get a new one with the new shock. You will also need 21 (8 of) to seal the ends.
You can reuse parts 5, 6, 8 and just give them a really good clean.

Wish I'd never asked
Re: Changing rear shock. What to check at same time?
As long as they are not broken up or starting to disintegrate just give the whole lot an extreme clean. Maybe soak it all in paraffin overnight, scrub it all up. Make sure all the rollers are working, re-grease everything and just put new seals on. No need to change things if it's all working and functioning fine.
