crankshaft end cap

Post by ebenviljoen »

Help chaps, trying to do cct but the crankshaft end cap aint coming off. Compltely stripped now and hammer and chissel not getting it off either. Inspection cap came off. I was thinking of taking the altenator cover off and tap a thread from the back and bolt to try and screw it out. Can i just take the whole cover off? And where can i buy a new cap? Cant see any?? Cheers

Try with a centre punch to make some holes with which to get some 'grip' to drift the cap round and out. As TonyM demonstrates below

Replacements can be had from http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk or gl_s_r might have some of his special versions.

Drill a hole, 5~6mm in dia, about 4mm deep. Then use a center pin punch and hammer to "turn" the cap.. drill your hole about 8mm in from the outside edge, and do not go too deep or you will drill into the side cover.

Common problem on a lot of bikes, and this method has never failed to work at getting them out... done a few VTR's this faw as well.

I had the exact same issue today with Mac's new Drooper bike as I was swapping cct's from one bike to the other. I ended up using a centre punch but this just started chewing it all up. I then applied a bit of propane and then used the centre punch/chisel to get it out. A bit of heat helps. And don't hit it too close to the the outer edge.

I found "gently" heating the casing was all it needed to let mine come out (and alot of hammering :p).

When you put new ones on, use a bit of copper slip and don't overtighten them.
