Hi,
I've recently bought a 98 model and (according to the previous owner) it had a top end engine rebuild approx 5,000 klms ago (what's that, about 3,000 miles?) due to CCT failure.
It is good and tight and goes like a rocket, however I notice especially when the engine is hot that there is a fair bit of tappet noise, noticeable mainly at idle or low revs.
Is this just in need of the tappet clearances being redone or is it likely to be an indication of CCTs failing (already!).

Best way to find out is to measure the valve clearances - and at the same time check that the manual CCTs, presumably fitted after the auto CCT failed, are correctly tensioned. If it had auto CCTs refitted after its last episode then strongly recommend you replace them pronto with failsafe alternative, as auto CCTs are binary in operation - They either work or they don't - with potential catastrophic consequences as you're aware.

These engines are quite noisy and "rattly" compared to an IL4, if that's what you have been used to. If it is a CCT it won't sound tappetty, but slappety slappety! The only way to find out is to check the clearances, as has been said.

There is a possibility that it is rattling due to clearances being opened out when the head was rebuilt

Some other area's to look at.
Clutch rattle ?
exhaust gaskets ?
Timing one tooth out ?
Valves usually go tighter with shim type adjustment, so if loose then maybe not set correctly when rebuilt.
