Space Around Rear Bodywork?
I needed to replace the fittings that hold the rear cowling onto the rear sub frame (mine had odd screws & missing the gromets, etc).
So these are the bits I purchased from david Silver to do the job with.
According to the parts diagram below these are all the parts I needed to do the job. 1 metal collar (22), 1 grommet (1) and 1 screw (20).
But when I had fitted the grommet to the bodywork, inserted the metal collar and fitted the screw and tightened it all up I was left with this space shown in the picture below. The screw has tightened the metal collar hard up against the rear subframe and the bodywork with the grommet fitted to it can slide sideways on the metal collar by about 5 to 6mm.
Can someone explain if that gap should be between the lower edge of the head of the screw and the grommet and this is normal or am I missing something here.
Thanks

Mine has the bold and collar but does allow a little movement in the panel. I think its meant to.
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!
Re: Space Around Rear Bodywork?
its prolly so you dont over tighten and crack the plastic

Mine has the gap.
Dare I ask about the wire?
Dare I ask about the wire?
It may only be my opinion but it's mine!

If you remove the collar you'll end up with cracked plastics! I fitted a rubber washer with mine to take up the gap but still allow movement

I was waiting for that. I knew someone would notice.2wheelsagain wrote:Mine has the gap.

The reason is to hold this lot up off the ground or hanging in mid air.

Thanks Watty, good idea with the rubber washer. I will look out for one to take up the gap.Watty wrote:If you remove the collar you'll end up with cracked plastics! I fitted a rubber washer with mine to take up the gap but still allow movement

Also suspension from vibration and all the bumps and movement the rear end goes through. The rubber washer is a good idea.its prolly so you dont over tighten and crack the plastic

Re: Space Around Rear Bodywork?
Or you have later model seat unit and a early model collar .
While working on both early and late model storms I noticed the later model bikes had thinner plastics .
Don't know if that helped :

Re: Space Around Rear Bodywork?
Yes it seems that way, except for the fact that this is a brand new Honda part ordered off the microfiche. Carl could be right (he usually is) they could have left a bit of space around there for movement of the rear cowling so it dopesn't fracture/crack, etc if it was mounted more rigidly. Thanks for your comments though. Appreciated.simo wrote:Sounds like the collar is too long mate.

Re: Space Around Rear Bodywork?
Lloydie I checked out the Part # for the collar for both early and late models and the part numbers are exactly the same for all models of the VTR Firestorm. So if they did make the rear cowling of different thicknesses then they certainly did not alter the size of the collar to suit. In fact the Part # Fiche gives the size of the collar as well (6.3 x 9.5), the same for all models.lloydie wrote:Or you have later model seat unit and a early model collar .

Don't know if that helped :
I think I will go with the rubber washer idea to take up the space or maybe a nice thick "O" ring to allow some movement but not too much.

Re: Space Around Rear Bodywork?
Not always, I'm taking a guess on this one. Did the spacers come in the genuine Honda packet with part number. There is a chance they sent the wrong ones as there are different sizes like the front tank mounts or radiators.Carl could be right (he usually is)
Lloyd it would not surprise me if they skimped on plastic on the later models as they did with the metal on the front farting (correction...fairing) brackets. I thought I'd keep that typo in. They may have required a little more space as the ECU is mounted to the subframe in the tail fairing There's quite a few subtle differences between an early and late model storm. The last one I spotted was a round lug mounted at the rear on the bottom of the engine casings that''s not on early models.
Ooo gogglebox is just starting must stop writing.

Carl, the metal collars did arrive in the official Honda packaging, as did the rubber gromets and screws as well.cybercarl wrote:Not always, I'm taking a guess on this one.
