6 mm spacer

Post by gabi81 »

I know this thread has come up over and over but I didn't get my answer after searching so here it goes
After the install of the spacer would I need to modify the air gap in front? I have ohlins springs and no idea of air gap...and would it be somehow dangerous to run as it is with spacer added?
Aha you know what it is black and yellow...black and yellow !!!

You don't need to alter the air gap, you may need to adjust the preload to get to around 25mm static sag. you also imo don't need a 6mm spacer, a 3mm or maybe 4mm will be enough.

Not dangerous as it's not that extreme a change. But I agree with popkat that 6mm may be a bit too much. I went back to 3mm as recommended by Roger. I have also dropped the forks 5mm. By dropping the forks by lifting the stanchions up threw the yokes. You can do one side at a time without jacking the front up.

It's a trial and error kinda of thing, try it and see. If you don't like it then adjust again one way or the other and find what's comfortable for you, but don't go no more than 6mm at the rear or 10mm at the front otherwise handling may become....I don't want to use the word dangerous, but more unstable is a better term.

Ok so my next question...
How do I fit it as I tried and I'm not able to lift back end up to slot washer in...
I was thinking of a jack between swingarm and top frame would that work?

Loosen the top shock mount nut. Not all the way, juts enough for the threaded part to drop through a bit. Then get a mate to tip the bike over onto it's sidestand and you should be able to slot the spacer in place.

Get a helper... Seat off, loosen the top shock nut but do not remove !!! One of you stands on the left hand side of bike (you may feel more comfy being the lifter as it's your bike of course...), side stand down. Lean over & grab the right hand clip on pull in to full right lock. With your right foot butted up against the stand lean over & grab the subframe & pull the bike up... It will pivot on the stand & raise the rear wheel off the floor. once you get it up it will balance & the weight is not a factor, however you want it done quick as the fear is the stand giving way. It's a tried & tested method BTW. I fitted my spacer this way & on several occasions have done this when having an MOT so the tester can check the rear wheel bearings...

The weight should make the wheel drop down allowing the now loose shock to drop far enough to slot in the spacer. Open end to the rear...

Obviously its the spare person either you or the helper to slot it in ASAP.

Once the spacer is in lower the bike back down onto it's wheel, then you can tighten up the shock nut...Job done...Simples..
