What special tools do I need?

Post by freeridenick »

I've hunted around but can't find all the info in one place. Am I right with the below?

Without looking at maintenance jobs like mechanical seal replacement all I need to take an engine apart to provide useful spares are:
  • Flywheel holder
  • Fly wheel puller
  • clutch holder
  • valve spring compressor

If you have a 1\2" drive air impact there is no need for a holder.

The puller is a 22x1.5 bolt around 50 -60mm long if I remember correctly but one of these guys can confirm the length.

You do need a way to hold the clutch

Along with a valve spring tool you will also need a old 35mm film container or something like one.
You cut the bottom out and it goes between the spring and the head so you don't damage the head with the spring tool.

I haven't got air tools. Is a normal impact driver not enough?

If the engine is in the chassis it is not a real issue, just use a 2X4 through the rear wheel so the swingarm locks everything in place.
If it is out of the bike it can be tough as the bolt is torqued down to 130ft\lbs.

If you don't have a comp. to run air tools they also have new battery powered units can can also do the job.
Or someone might be able to loan you one for the job
